MIPC: Dr. Lotus' Hot Foot Spell

Dr. Lotus

  • Medium: The Cosby Show Season 5, Episode 17
  • Episode Title: The Dead End Kids Meet Dr. Lotus
  • Air Date:  2/16/1989
  • Episode Description: Theo's former girlfriend, Justine, is starting to date other men and Theo is upset. Theo consults a voodoo shopkeeper for a spell or potion that will help him win her back.

The Spell

"I take this chicken foot and cover it with vinegar. Then I write Scott's name
backwards on sheet parchment. I burn the sheet parchment and sprinkle the ashes
over the chicken foot. And Scott will go away, and he will know why."

The Analysis

I think whoever wrote this spell knew exactly what they were doing. I wouldn't be surprised if it was taken from the writer's own experience with these matters, his or her local, reginal, or ethnic lore or if it could be found in a grimoire unknown to me. At any rate, this rite is very symbolic. Let's break it down.

  • The Chicken Foot - Chicken feet have long been used in folk magic spells for protection and money. In this instance, I believe the chicken foot as as a sort of Voodoo Doll for the enemy in question.
  • The Vinegar - Vinegar is sometimes used to cleanse objects, but more commonly it is the main ingredient in sour jars. In this instance, I believe the vinegar is used to sour Scott on the particular place that he is in, so that he is no longer happy there.
  • The Petition - Many spells include a written elements, and petitions are often written backs (called mirror writing) when doing enemy work to send someone away.
  • Burning - The act of burning the written petition brings the heat needed to activate the spell and get things moving.
  • Sprinkling the Ashes - Sprinkling the ashes on the chicken foot is done to form a connection between the enemy and one's desire to send them away.

Again, I think that this is a good  old-time spell. The only thing I would add to this rite would probably be to 1) dress the chicken foot and the name-paper with Hot Foot Oil 2) pray over the chicken foot that the enemy go away and 3) burn the chicken foot or bury it somewhere far off one's property at the conclusion of the spell.

You could also augment this spell by burning a fixed hot foot candle and burning hot foot incense while performing this spell. At the conclusion of the spell remove any candle remains, incense ashes, and the chicken foot well off your property. I would NOT toss it in running water as this is a hot foot spell and wouldn't want the water to cool it.

Mercury in 00° Taurus

Mercury in Taurus General
When Mercury is in Taurus, our thoughts and speech slow down. We speak and communication more deliberately, determined to get our point across.  Our thinking processes, such as how we process and exchange information, becomes more slow as well and we are less inclined to change our minds about any subject or matter (Taurus is a fixed sign).  Our thoughts may turn to money and material matters. We may become more fond of what makes us comfortable in terms of the senses such as food, art, music etc...
How Mercury in Taurus Affects You
The house that Taurus occupies in your Natal Chart is the area of life where you will have slow, deliberate thoughts.
  • If your rising sign is Aries, Taurus is your 2nd House.
  • If your rising sign is Taurus, Taurus is your 1st House.
  • If your rising sign is Gemini, Taurus is your 12th House.
  • If your rising sign is Cancer, Taurus is your 11th House.
  • If your rising sign is Leo, Taurus is your 10th House.
  • If your rising sign is Virgo, Taurus is your 9th House.
  • If your rising sign is Libra, Taurus is your 8th House.
  • If your rising sign is Scorpio, Taurus is your 7th House.
  • If your rising sign is Sagittarius, Taurus is your 6th House.
  • If your rising sign is Capricorn, Taurus is your 5th House.
  • If your rising sign is Aquarius, Taurus is your 4th House.
  • If your rising sign is Pisces, Taurus is your 3rd House.
Example
Mercury in Taurus in the 7th House
Mercury in this placement can bring slow, deliberate thoughts about our relationships of all kinds. This might be a period in which we consider our relationships and if we are truly happy and satisfied with them. Mercury in the 7th house can indicate a period of (re) negotiation (mercury rules contracts) in our relationships to fix what may be broken or not working as it should be. We may communicate more with the people in our lives who represent our partners, this can be in business or in romantic relationships. You may find that you communicate better one-on-one with other people rather than with groups of individuals.
Aspects
Aspects, or relationships between planets, is another dimension of astrological interpretation that can be examined. Let us suppose then that you have Mars at 9° Taurus. This would mean that Transit Mars is applying a conjunction to your Natal Mars. A conjunction is a type of aspect in which the urge of one planet blends with the urge of another habit so well that it is difficult to tell them apart. Let us break it down:
Transit Mercury + Conjunct + Natal Mars
I Think + blends with + I act
When transit Mercury conjuncts Natal Mars the urge to communicate blends with the assertiveness of Mars. Your communication style is more aggressive now. Consequently you can get into more heavy debates and arguments the short time this aspect is active.  Your words carry more weight and power now, which is good because you may have to defend your stance or opinion on some matter. Even if you are sure of your own opinion, you express yourself with such confidence that you are able to sway people to your way of thinking.
How will the ingress of Mercury into Taurus manifest for you?

MOtW: The Incredible Journey of Dr. Meg Laurel

Note:  MOtW stands for Movie of the Week. This is the first of a new feature in 2022. I will be sharing movies of interest that I think you all will like as well. When possible, I will provide links where you can watch the movie online.

Summary: The Incredible Journey of Dr. Meg Laurel (1978)

The Incredible Journey of Dr. Meg Laurel was a made-for-television movie on CBS in 1978. It stars Lindsay Wager, known for her portrayal as the Bionic Woman, as Dr. Meg Laurel and Jane Wyman of Falcon Crest as the mountain healer Granny Arrowroot.

In 1932, in Boston, the tough Harvard graduate Dr. Meg Laurel lashes out at the corrupt and powerful Judge Adamson. Her husband Dr. Thom Laurel is worried about the damage that the judge may cause in his career and Meg decides to leave him in Boston and return to the orphanage where she was raised to visit her friend Effie Webb. She learns that the orphanage is closed, and Effie has returned to her hometown Eagle's Nest in the mountains.

When Dr. Laurel arrives at Effie's home, she finds that her friend is on her deathbed under the care of the healer Granny Arrowroot. Dr. Laurel is unsuccessful in her attempt to save Effie that asks her to stay to help her people with her medical knowledge. Soon Dr. Laurel finds an illiterate and backward people that appraises traditions and belief more than the modern medical techniques. Further, she goes against Granny and is not accepted by the community. But both Meg and Granny discover that they have much to learn with each other.

Interesting Things about this Movie

  • Granny Arrowroot shares several remedies with Dr. Laurel, such as using maggots to eat the infection out of a sebaceous cyst in a person's ear.
  • She also talks about how a scientist came to the mountain and took back herb samples. She specifically mentions the scientist taking willow bark from which aspirin is derived.
  • We also get to witness some mountain rituals such as the Ritual of the Sin Eater -
featuring James Woods as the outcast Sin Eater. "Devil of the Fire, Devil of the Heat, with this food Effie Webb's sin's I eat"
  • We also get to witness mountain wedding ceremony during which the groom chops down a tree and the number of strokes it takes to fell the tree equals the number of children the happy couple will have.

I first saw The Incredible Journey of Dr. Meg Laurel on the movie channel and recorded it on DVD which I still have somewhere. Although the DVD is available on amazon, I have not found anywhere you can watch it online. If you can find it, I highly recommend this movie.

Venus in 00° Pisces

Venus in Pisces (General)
Venus is said to be exalted in Pisces, meaning that it is more powerful than in other signs (especially Aries, Scorpio, and Virgo) When Venus is in Pisces people are more compassionate, romantic, sensitive, introverted and shy. They may avoid public displays of affection now and even seem uninterested in any type of romance. If they are interested in anyone they may even keep it to themselves. Secret relationships in which one partner feels drawn to save or protect another partner are possible now. In addition, spirituality becomes a greater focus now and many folks move to release their emotion and psychic baggage.
Where Pisces falls in your Natal Chart is the area of life where you will love to believe in something and may engage in escapist types of dreams.
  • If your rising sign is Aries, Pisces is your 12th House.
  • If your rising sign is Taurus, Pisces is your 11th House.
  • If your rising sign is Gemini, Pisces is your 10th House.
  • If your rising sign is Cancer, Pisces is your 9th House.
  • If your rising sign is Leo, Pisces is your 8th House.
  • If your rising sign is Virgo, Pisces is your 7th House.
  • If your rising sign is Libra, Pisces is your 6th House.
  • If your rising sign is Scorpio, Pisces is your 5th House.
  • If your rising sign is Sagittarius, Pisces is your 4th House.
  • If your rising sign is Capricorn, Pisces is your 3rd House.
  • If your rising sign is Aquarius, Pisces is your 2nd House.
  • If your rising sign is Pisces, Pisces is your 1st House.
Example
Venus in Pisces and the 5th House
I love to believe in love and dream that is possible
When Venus is in Pisces and the 5th house, you may engage in escapist type dreams about love and the possibility of finding it for yourself.  For this reason you might display more playful and romantic behavior in order to attract more attention and interest. It's also possible that you could find yourself being pursued by someone special who is artistic and creative. You could meet this person through a hobby or a place where creative types meet.  If so, don't hesitate to accept their invitation because this is a good time to initiate a new relationship.
Aspects
Aspects, or relationships between planets is an aspect of astrological interpretation that should be considered. For example. Venus in 0° Pisces is making a trine (helpful aspect) to my natal Venus at 2° Scorpio and a square (difficult aspect) to my Neptune at 4° Sagittarius.
With transit Venus making a trine to natal Venus and a square to natal Neptune you are more charming and attractive, you like being around people and be in social situations. However, you can get lost in your fantasies. You can engage in self-deceptive thinking preferring illusions over reality. You are more susceptible to being used by someone you (think) you care about. Its best now not to make any final decisions until the aspect passes.

MIPC: A Powerful Spell of Attraction

The Spell
In a small cottage deep in Sherwood Forest, a woman sits before a fire with a female-doll and a cord in her lap as she cast the following spell over a male-doll she holds in her hands.
…”who are Princes residing in you. I conjure you that you send down to obsesses, torment, and harass the body, spirit, mind and five senses of he whom I desire; and that he shall have no friendship for anyone in this world other than I, Lilith, your servant. So shall he be obsessed and tormented and look on no other than me nor find any love or comfort with anyone but with me, I conjure you to accomplish this my will and I, Lilith, do promise to satisfy you duly. By Hermes the Thrice Great, by the Shield of Solomon [Lilith takes up a female doll in her right hand representing herself and holds it up facing the male doll in her right hand] by all the power of the Lords of Darkness… Creature of Earth, I name thee Herne’s son, Robin Hood… now thou art he! [Lilith brings the two dolls together and binds them with what appears to be a knotted length of red cord, she then holds the bound dolls over her fire] So shall it be! Come to me…Come to me!”
Robin of Sherwood, “The Enchantment”
Original Air Date: March 30, 1985

The Analysis

This is actually a combination of two spells 1) an incantation and 2) an old sympathetic magic spell that have been pieced together from different sources. The incantation is based on a spell titled To Cause a Girl to Seek You Out However Prudent She May Be which can be found in the Book of Ceremonial Magic written by A.E. Waite and is itself based on older Grimoires.

In this spell the magician is instructed to draw a specific talisman on paper incorporating the name of the intended into the talisman and writing certain sacred names on its reverse. He must then venture outside between 11 pm and midnight with his talisman, and a candle. He places the talisman on the bare ground, with his right foot on top of it and his left knee bent to the ground. With the lit candle in is right hand he looks to the Moon and then seeks out the brightest star in the heavens and repeats the incantation given below three times; after which he places the candle on top of the talisman until it is spent. Thereafter he places the talisman in his left shoe until the one he desires comes to him.

I salute and conjure you, O beautiful Moon, O beautiful Star, O bright light which I hold in my hand! By the air which I breathe, by the breath which is within me, by the earth which I touch, I conjure you, and by all the names of the spirits who are Princes residing in you; by the ineffable Name ON, Which hath created all; by thee, O Resplendent Angel Gabriel, together with the Prince Mercury, Michiael and Melchidael! I conjure you again by all the Divine Names of God, that you send down to obsess, torment and harass the body, spirit, soul and five senses of the nature of N., whose name is written here below, in such a way that she shall come unto me and accomplish my will, having no friendship for any one in the world, but especially for N., so long as she shall be indifferent to me. So shall she endure not, so shall she be obsessed, so suffer, so be tormented. Go then, promptly; go, Melchidael, Baresches, Zazel, Firiel, Malcha, and all those who are without you (sic). I conjure you by the great living God to accomplish my will, and I, N., do promise to satisfy you duly.

The second part of the spell, the binding of two dolls together, is one of the most ancient forms of magic known as Sympathetic Magic. Sympathetic Magic works on the principle that ‘invisible bonds connect all things’. It can be divided into two categories, Homeopathic Magic and Contagious Magic. The Scottish anthropologist Sir James G. Frazer first described these types in his book The Golden Bough (1890).

Homeopathic Magic holds that “like attracts like.” A classic example of this type of magic is the melting of a waxen image of an enemy resulting in his or her death. Contagious Magic holds that “things once in contact with one another continue to exert an influence on one another after they have been separated.” An example of Contagious Magic from a folk magic remedy to cure a wound would be to rub some medicine on the object which caused the wound in the first place. The most popular and well-known form of Sympathetic Magic is the use of poppets, or dolls.

Although a spell such as the one described above can be worked with any number of items in place of the dolls it will have a greater chance for success if those items incorporate the personal concerns of the two individuals. I have personally seen a spell of this type performed with

  • Two sticks
  • Cologne/Perfume Bottles
  • Chess Pieces
  • Dimes from each person's birth year
  • Salt/Pepper Shakers
  • Two Lodestones
  • Candles
  • Underwear (tied together)

In each case the spell followed the same basic format. First the items were named after the two people concerned. Second they were ritually brought together. This could be done all at once or over a succession of days (usually as the moon grows).  Finally, the two items were bound together with red cord of thread. The belief was that as the two items came together and bound, those the items represented would come together by the powerful force of magnetic attraction and be bound together (usually by love, or desire).

That being said, I believe that the spell cited at the beginning of this entry has all the ingredients to be successful. However, if I were to consider casting this spell myself I would change the verbiage of the spell so as to avoid any debt to a higher power to which I hold no allegiance. Furthermore, in place of the fire I would burn a candle prepared with herbs and oils that correspond to my goal.

Movie of the Week: Stranger in Our House (1978)

Note:  MOtW stands for Movie of the Week. This is the first of a new feature in 2022. I will be sharing movies of interest that I think you all will like as well. When possible, I will provide links where you can watch the movie online.

Description

A teenage girl's life is turned upside down after her cousin moves into her house, and as time goes by, she begins to suspect that she may be a practitioner of witchcraft.
Commentary
Directed by Wes Craven and starring Linda Blair, Stranger in Our House is based on the novel Summer of Fear by prolific writer  Lois Duncan  who is probably best known for writing I Know What You Did Last Summer.
Other notable actors who appear in the movie include Mcdonald Carey of Days of Our Lives Fame, Fran Drescher in her first movie, and Jeff East who played teenage Clark Kent in the big budget Superman Film.
There are a couple of differences between the book and the movie. Mostly notably, Trickle was a dog in the book, however, due to Linda Blair's love of horses, Trickle was changed to a horse.
The movie (and book) gives us a look into Appalachian Folk Magic and beliefs. In one scene a character drops a knife at the table and Cousin Julia remarks that a male visitor will be coming. A few moments later a male neighbor boy stops by. In other instances, Linda Blair's characters find a photograph of herself covered in red blotches after she had spent several days suffering from a sudden rash. Finally, we also see evidence of a death ritual that the witch had performed.
All in all this is a light horror movie with an interesting take on witchcraft and a final twist that the audience doesn't see coming.
