The Stones of Light - Part 3: The Sastun

The Sastun (pronounced Sas-Tune) comes from the spiritual beliefs and practices of the Ancient Mayans. It is a magical tool used by their H'men (Shaman) to heal, divine (diagnose illness), and cast spells. It's name means "Stone of Light" or "Light of the Ages". However, I have read another meaning of the name Sastun is "Clear Stone". 

The Sastun takes many forms, shapes, and sizes. They can be large or small, round or oblong.  Some are actual crystals, others are rocks, or they can be something as ordinary as a child's marble. One thing, however, they have in common is that they "have a light that sparkles when it moves and you can peer into it as a mirror. You may find dots, lines, crosses, Virgins, and rainbows that give you answers. If you have the lamp to see it." 

A Sastun isn't something you can just go to a store and purchase - they cannot be bought or taken, but rather they are a gift from the Nine Celestial beings at the core of Mayan culture. To receive a Sastun from the Mayan Spirits is a sign that you are a special person who has been chosen to act as a healer and diviner for your people. Many people pray for one but only few actually receive a Sastun. 

In most cases that I have read the individual simply finds their Sastun - that is, one moment is it not there and the next it is. There have been some reports of individuals receiving their Sastun by it being given to them from another person. In these cases it is believed that the Mayan Spirits used that person as a carrier. Finally, in some cases a person can have more than one Sastun with each one serving a specific purpose. For example, one Sastun for divining illness and another for casting spells. In her book, Sastun: My Apprenticeship with a Maya Healer, Rosita Arvigo describes one of her mentor's Sastun's as a "green marble". 

Rosita Arvigo also describes the rituals to activate and use the Sastun for healing, divination, and spellcasting as taught to her by her teacher and mentor Don Elijio Panti. For instance, the prayer below is recited nine times while bathing your Sastun in rum and making the sign of the cross over the stone. It should be noted that  the cross here symbolizes the Mayan World Tree. Next, go to sleep with the crystal near you or beneath your pillow, waiting for a dream that will show you how to use it.

“Sastun, Sastun. With your great power I ask that you tell me all I want to know. Teach me to understand signs. Visit me in all my dreams Give me the answers that I seek. I have faith that this Sastun will answer all my prayers. God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit, amen”. 

However, my research seems to indicate that the use of a Sastun is a highly individual experience and that, like other magical stones such as the Rukschtee of Bracherei, the stone teaches you how it is to be used. Further instruction on how to use the Sastun may also be given by the Mayan Spirits through one's dreams. 

The Sastun is mainly used to divine illness by way of scrying (crystal gazing) with the stone. In some cases the diviner may see images in the stone itself, they may see pictures in their head, or they may psychically hear a voice giving them advice and instruction while scrying with the stone. 

As stated earlier, the Sastun can also be used to cast spells. In one instance, a woman comes to Don Elijio Panti asking him to return her brother who has gone missing. Don Elijio Panti places a photograph of the man, provided by his sister, in his left hand. He then places the Sastun on top of the photo and places his right hand on top of the Sastun. He then swirls the Sastun in circles around the photo while offering a prayer for the man's return. He uses a similar method to empower his herbal amulets and cast love spells. 

When not in use, Don Elijio Panti is said to keep his Sastun in a ceramic jar with a rag used as a lid. Another healer is said to keep her Sastun in a leather pouch which she carries with her. 

My Experience with the Sastun 

In May of 2020, I was making a video for my Youtube channel. I was filming a video on how to harvest, dry, and use dandelion root. I finished the video, but continued to harvest more roots to dry for later use. While working outside, I came across this green marble thought it was cool and tucked in my pocket to keep. I had read Rosita Arvigo's book some years earlier and somehow I made the connection between my marble and the story of the Sastun. 

I performed the prescribed rituals as outlined in the book to bless and activate the Sastun. Since that time, I have used it to divine, cast spells, and perform healing work in addition to other uses it has taught me.  In one instance, I successfully called back a lost lover by taking the Sastun and rolling it counter-clockwise around his photo (like reeling in a fish) while calling him back to me in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Ghost.

Book Review: Coffin Point

Ed McTeer was arguably one of the most colorful and influential men to ever hold the office of High Sheriff of Beaufort County, South Carolina. Appointed by the governor in 1926 to finish out his late father’s term, McTeer became the youngest sheriff in the country at the age of 22 earning himself the nickname of “Boy Sheriff”. With the brief exception of commanding the United States Coast Guard Beach Patrol during World War 2, McTeer remained the sheriff of Beaufort County until he was voted out in 1962 after 36 years of service.

During his long career in law-enforcement, McTeer faced off with bootleggers, rum-runners, murderers, assorted criminals, and even a nudist-colony! In addition, he became an influential figure in both local and state politics, was credited with keeping the Klan out of Beaufort County and creating a place where black people were treated fairly.

However it was his dealings with local root doctors, most notably Dr. Buzzard, which made Ed McTeer more than the average lawman. McTeer understood the power of belief and took it upon himself to learn the power of “the root,” becoming a white-witchdoctor in the process. After the death of Dr. Buzzard, South Carolina’s most infamous root doctor, McTeer claimed that he was the “"last remaining tie to the true African Witchcraft."

As an almost legendary figure, there are a number of stories concerning McTeer, his exploits and adventures. As evidenced by his own writings, McTeer himself often contradicted his own stories giving different accounts of the same events. In Coffin Point, Woods has combined these accounts along with first-person interviews from people who personally knew McTeer to paint us a cohesive portrait of the man and the legend.

With brief, episodic chapters, Coffin Point is a quick read spanning McTeer’s life, career, death and legacy. Woods treats his subject(s) with the respect it deserves but pulls no punches with regard to the region, its history, its characters, and many contradictions. Those interested in the beliefs and practices of Lowcountry-Witchcraft will be disappointed to find very little practical information on the subject with regard to spells and recipes. However, the discerning reader will learn the importance of power and belief. In addition, history-lovers may question why the author chose not to include any photographs of McTeer, his collection of scrapbooks, or the natural beauty of the Lowcountry that McTeer called home.

Anyone who has lived or grown up in an area known for its influential figures and rich history knows the importance of ensuring that such knowledge and history is not forgotten or otherwise lost to us. In Coffin Point, Baynard Woods has done the state of South Carolina a great service by reminding us of the life and times of one of the most colorful and influential men to come out of the Palmetto State.

MIPC: Divination by Runes

Note: MIPC stands for Magic in Popular Culture and this is a series of entries in which I take a spell, ritual, belief, etc... from a work of fiction such as books, comic books, movies, or television shows and analyze it against real world belief and practices. 

Stardust: The Book Vs. The Movie 

In this entry will we explore the manner in which the Runes are cast in the 2007 motion picture Stardust as well as the book by the same name and written by Neil Gaiman. As you can see in the above video, the soothsayer works with four Runes. The Runic symbols appear to be carved in bone or possibly wooden rectangles. They are: Birch, Odal, Ing, and what appears to be Lagu (which if you are paying attention spells out BOIL)  If you watch the above video closely, however, the Witch Queen (played by Michelle Pfeiffer) appears to be using different symbols. Of the four she tossed in the air, I could only see two which were Jera and Daeg.  The Runes are operated by posing a  subjective question and then casting the Runes on a flat surface. If all four Runes fall face up, the answer is yes; if they all fall face down the answer is now. There seems to be a force (magic?) which prevents them from falling any other way. 

The book differs from the movie in that the runes are described as small, square, red granite tiles. Specific symbols are not mentioned nor are they shown. In one scene the runes are cast, picked up and then cast again. From this reading, one of the villain's is able to determine that his prey (the falling star) is "moving faster and further."  In another scene, the same villain has to decide if he can trust a stranger to travel with him. He removes the velvet pouch containing his four runes from around his neck and has the traveler pick three of them one at a time. He regards the runes and determines that the traveler can come with him. No explanation of how he came to this conclusion is given. 

The Elder Futhark 

The Runes come to us from Norse cultures. According to the Icelandic Elder Edda, Odin spied the runes as he hung from the Tree of Yggdrasil. Other names for the Runes include the Futhark or Elder Futhark - so named after the first six runes Fehu, Urisaz, Thorn, Ansu, Radio, and Ken... so when you say Futhark, it's sort of like saying "A, B, C's". 

Unlike the fantasy world of Stardust there are actually 24 Runes divided into three groups of eight called aetts. Each aett is named after the first Rune in that group. The first group is Fehu, the second group is Hagal, and the third group is Tyr. I should mention that sometimes there is a 25th rune which is blank and which represents the unknown. 

Each rune has it's own divinatory meaning. In fact, some runes are associated with Nordic Gods or forces of nature. Similar to the book and movie portrayed in Stardust, runes are often used for divination. They may be drawn unseen out of a pouch or bag while at other times they may be cast on a flat surface and read according to the diviner's interpretation and/ or tradition. 

In my experience working with the Runes in the past, I would only read those runes which fell face up. Those runes closest to me would represent the past, those furthest from me would represent the present and those in between would be regarded as the future. 

How to Divine with Four Runes 

Magic in the real world often differs from how it is portrayed in the world of fiction. It would be insane to think that when casting four Runes they would always fall right side up or upside down with no variation. Therefore if we were to adapt this practice for the purpose of divination we might look to other forms of divination which are similar. 

For example the Obi method of divination makes use of four coconut shells, called chamalongos, although you can use any four objects which can be read as right side up or upside down - such as cowries shells, coins (I would recommend four silver mercury dimes, or even four dominoes).. The chamalongos consists of two sides: a dark side (the convex side) and a light side (the concave side). The dark side is though to be heads and the light side is tails.

The chamalongos are operated in a manner similar to the way they are used in Stardust. That is, a subjective question is asked then the chamalongos are tossed on to a flat surface and are read depending upon how they fall. With the four chamalongos there are five possible outcomes. They are:

• Four Heads Up- When all four chamalongos fall heads up, the answer is Yes. 
• Three Heads, One Tails - In this case the answer is maybe, or more likely than not likely. This outcome always requires a second throwing of the oracle. If the second toss is Four Heads Up, Three Heads, One Tail, or Two Heads and Two Tails - then the answer is yes. If the second throw is One Head Three Tails or Four Heads, then the answer is no. 
• Two Heads and Two Tails- When the chamalongos fall in this pattern then answer is yes and you are not to ask the question again. 
• One Head and Three Tails - This pattern represents a firm and definite No answer. 
• Four Tails - When the oracle presents this pattern the answer is a very strong no and may indicate evil, negativity, or other blockages around you that may require spiritual cleansings before you can move forward

Again this only speculation on my part, since the rules of magic work differently in the universe of Stardust and I could be completely wrong. However, using the Obi Divination as a model it would be quite possible to use four runes for divination purposes. I have about three runes sets but I would not want to break any of them up to use exclusively n this manner. 

However, I might use this method as an adjunct to the overall traditional manner of divination with the runes. For example, after the runes are cast and read the querent may want clarification on a few points. You may want to turn all the runes face down and mix them up thoroughly. Next, have the querent pick four Runes. The Runes chosen can be read in relation to the question and then these same four Runes could be cast in the manner described above and then interpreted in the same manner as the chamalongos.

Full Moon in 25° Scorpio

 

A Full Moon occurs when the Sun and Moon occupy the same degree of opposite signs of the zodiac.  As you can see from the chart above, the Moon is at 25° Scorpio and the Sun is at 25° Taurus forming an opposition creating a dynamic of challenging one another; something is being split or divided.  

The Big Picture

Taurus is all about me. My money, my possessions, my values. Scorpio is about us. Our money, our possessions, our values.  So there is a dynamic here of being torn between what is mine and what is ours. We can see this energy play out on a grand scale by watching the news, looking at our newsfeeds on social media, and listening to the people around us. 

How to Use Full Moon in Scorpio Energy 

• Identify & explore your passions. 
• Research a topic that interests you 
• Investigate a Mystery / Solve a Puzzle (word search, crosswords, jigsaw, etc..) 
• Participate in a Treasure Hunt  
• Be more flirtatious, have a fling
• Practice self-transformation (what house in Scorpio in your natal chart?) 
• Embrace / Explore / Express your sexuality 
• Dare yourself to push past your own limitations. 

The Personal Touch

To understand how the Full Moon in Scorpio affects us on a personal level we would look to see where Scorpio and Taurus falls in our natal charts. For example 25° Scorpio in my Natal Chart falls in my first house and 25° Taurus falls in my 7th house. These houses rule over the self and one's relationships respectively.  Therefore, for me, I may feel torn between my own needs as a person and the needs of my partners in business, friendships, or relationships. 

Whereas the New Moon brings new beginnings and new opportunities the Full Moon brings completion and endings. The Full Moon in Scorpio (my natal 1st house) can mean a time of introspection and self-evaluation. This can be a time wherein I am more emotional and I have to recognize and confront what I need to release in order to grow and evolve.  In addition, the Full Moon at 25° Scorpio is applying a conjunction to my Natal Neptune at 04° Sagittarius. With this placement I can feel mis-understood. I may find that I don't even understand myself. I can be overly optimistic or pessimistic. However, either way I can be vulnerable to deception.

Movie of the Week: The Skeleton Key (2005)

 

Description

Nurse Caroline Ellis quits her job to take care of elderly Ben Devereux who had a stroke and can't talk. When she gets to his house in Terrebonne Parish, Louisiana, she meets Ben's wife Violet, who acts suspicious and creepy. The family's lawyer, Luke Marshall, convinces Caroline to stay. She goes to the attic and finds a secret room there full of spells, hair, and bones used to practice Hoodoo, but Violet says she has never seen this secret room. Caroline wants to help Ben, thinking that Violet has put a spell on him. She knows Hoodoo can't hurt someone who doesn't believe in it. Can Caroline save Ben, or will she end up being the one who needs to be saved?

Commentary 

The Skeleton Kay is the movie that arguably brought Hoodoo to the masses. That is, not very many people outside the south heard of Hoodoo before The Skeleton Key, let alone knew what it way. Unfortunately, it also spawned a number of Papa This or Mama That who tried to capitalize on its success. 

That being said, The Skeleton Key very good movie with some horrific implications. Since it has a twist ending worthy of M. Night Shyamalan himself, I won't say much about it other than I highly recommend The Skeleton Key. However, we must also remember that this is a fictionalized version of what Hoodoo and all the things it can and cannot do.

Book Review: The Physick Book of Deliverance Dane

The Physick Book of Deliverance Dane, Katherine Howe

The story begins as Harvard graduate, Connie Goodwin passes her oral exams and advances to the next step in the doctoral candidacy process. Before she gets a chance to decide upon a topic for her doctoral thesis, Connie is asked by her eccentric mother (Grace) to prepare her grandmother’s long abandoned home to be sold in order to pay off the back taxes on the property. Her mother’s request couldn’t have come at a more inconvenient time for Connie as her advisor-cum-mentor, Manning Chilton, pressures her to find a new source-base for material on which to base her thesis rather than re-examining the same old tomes and references.

One dark night, while searching her grandmother’s house, Connie finds an old bible pressed inside of which is a key containing a rolled up slip of parchment on which is simply written the name Deliverance Dane. Curious at such a discovery, Connie begins researching the name learning that Deliverance Dane was a heretofore unknown woman accused and put to death for the crime of witchcraft during the Salem Witch Trials.

Connie’s research of historical records indicates that Deliverance owned a receipt-book (a book of things received, such as spells, rituals, herbal-cures, recipes etc..)  which she passed down to her daughter upon her death. Sharing this information with Manning Chilton, Connie recognizes the receipt-book as the new source base for her dissertation. Joining Connie on her quest is Sam Hartley, a handsome steeplejack; Liz, her roommate; and Arlo her pet dog.   As Connie traces the path of the receipt-book through time she comes to discover her family connection to this magical legacy and must put her faith in the wisdom of the past to defeat a powerful enemy in the present.

The central mystery really draws the reader in and the author does an excellent job of weaving back and forth between the present of 1991 and the Salem Witch Trials (c. 1692); however the observant reader will discern the identity of Connie’s enemy long before she ever does. The Physick Book of Deliverance Dane is really three stories that cross the boundaries of time and space intersecting at various points. On the one hand you have Connie’s story, set in 1991; and on the other there is the story of Deliverance Dane’s life and legacy set in and around the time of the Salem Witch Trials circa 1692. Finally, there is the path of the receipt-book that changes owners and forms through history.

The author does an excellent job of balancing magic and reality while still honoring the history of the Witch Trials at Salem. I really liked the flavor of magic as practiced by Deliverance Dane and enjoyed the fact that the author chose to use actual practices in the fictional world of Connie Goodwin such as the description of the Sieve and the Scissors for divination and the “Method for the Redress of Fitts” and would have loved it had she included more such examples. If you like magical-fiction with a touch of history, romance, and mystery…then this is the book for you. Deliverance Dane spawned a sequel The Daughters of Temperance Hobbs, which I also highly recommend.

The Stones of Light Part 2: The Divinity Stone

 The Divinity Stone 

The Divinity Stone comes to us from the healing practices of the Dutch Country Pow-Wows, also known as Braucherei.  Braucherei is a magical system akin to Hoodoo and other forms of Folk Magic. It originated in the folk magic practices of Germany and was brought to American by immigrants who originally settled largely in Pennsylvania. However, the immigrants migrated all over the U.S. and settled in other areas as well. 

I can tell you from personal experience that South Carolina saw an influx of German settlers in the past. I was born in Lancaster, S.C. which is the sister city to Lancaster, Pennsylvania. Lancaster, SC is known as the City of the Red Rose; and Lancaster, PA is known as the Red Rose City. Finally, one of South Carolina's most (in)famous residents was Mary Ingleman, a German immigrant, who is known as The First Witch of Winnsboro South Carolina.  Mary was a healer and herbalist, who is also thought to have practiced some form of Rune Magic. So South Carolina is a hot bed of at least three magical system: Hoodoo, Braucherei, and Witchcraft. 

The Divinity Stone is also known as the Fire Stone, Creek Stone, or Rukschtee  (rest) stone... and I am sure there are probably more names for this object which I am not aware of. The basic function of the Divinity Stone is to remove pain and dis-ease from the body. 

According to one source, to obtain a Rukschtee Stone, you have to go to some kind of border such as a fence line and search for a small round stone that is visible (i.e. you don't have to dig for it). Once you find it, that is your stone. Other sources say that the stone calls to the individual and it is a matter of being sufficiently aware of that call when it goes out. It is also believed that the stone will only work for the person that it is meant for. It is also said that the stone will teach you how to use it. Traditionally, the stone is placed under the pillow or mattress of the sick individual to draw out pain, sickness, and disease. Finally it should be washed in cold water between uses. When not being used, one source recommends keeping it in a special box. 

My Experiences with the Divinity Stone 

I found my Divinity Stone (although I simply call it my healing stone) about 15 years ago when I first moved from South Carolina to Washington.  It is about 2 inches long, smooth, and roughly egg shaped. It looks like a small potato. A friend took me around to explore Whidbey Island and I found the stone pictured above while hiking at trail in Oak Harbor, I honestly didn't know what it was at the time, but I knew it was special. It was much later that it occurred to me that it was a healing stone. I recall getting sick with a very bad cold that left my entire body aching. The idea to place the stone under my pillow came to me and from that day forward I found myself getting better. 

There was also another time I wasn't feeling well and laid down with the stone in my hand. I went in to a state where I was simultaneously both asleep and awake. In this state I had a dream vision that  I was driving a car around and around in circles on the island. I could not find a way off the island. I was stuck and then suddenly the path opened up before me and I drove off the island. Later I came to understand that someone was throwing for me and the stone took off the curse!

The Amazing Laws of Cosmic Mind Power

THE AMAZING LAWS OF COSMIC MIND POWER was a game changer for me. I found an early version of this book in a thrift store in Lancaster, South Carolina in the early 2000's. It traveled from South Carolina to Washington State with me when I moved in 2006. Then I lent it to a co-worker was was let go soon after. I never saw her, or my book again. Later, I purchased a newer copy. 

Joseph Murphy (1898 - 1981) was a New Thought minister and prolific author of several popular titles including The Power of your Subconscious Mind and Secrets of the I-Ching.  Long before I ever heard of The Secret or knew who Abraham Hicks was, I was introduced to the power of Affirmative Prayer and the Infinite Intelligence through the writings of Joseph Murphy. 

The book is broken up into 15 chapters with each chapter dedicated to a different "law." However, there really is only one law being applied here and that is the power of the mind through affirmative prayer. Instead, each chapter deals with a separate area of life. They are:

• The Dynamic Law of Protection 
• The Mysterious Law of Inner Guidance

This division is convenient in that you can go directly the the chapter which corresponds to the area of life that you are interested in addressing. 

Each chapter is broken up into case histories with the author describing an encounter with a troubled individual in which he counseled them and offered them a prayer treatment. Finally, he follows up with the result of each treatment. 

 Sample Prayer Treatment

A company she had worked for two years earlier owned the patents on a process that had just been found to be very valuable. The shares of stock she ha written off as worthless were now valued at almost $50,000.00. She sold the stocks, paid off her debts, and used so me of the balance to set up a consulting firm with one of the people from her last job. She later told me that she was supremely happy. 

Although some may not like the inclusion of Biblical Scripture, the prayer treatments can be edited to include your own Higher Power - whatever that may be. The Amazing Laws of Cosmic Mind Power is a book that I highly recommend.
