The Astrology of Bone Reading

What is Bone Reading?

PictureBone Reading is a form of divination that uses animal bones, nuts, shells, and curios such as dice or beads...collectively known as "bones" ...to divine information.

Each individual bone, or piece, has a specific meaning assigned to it, usually by virtue of the characteristics of the animal the bone comes from or the part of the body represented by the bone. For example, because Water Buffalos were known to be migratory animals, the water buffalo tooth is often associated with travel. In addition, a raccoon penis bone is associated with sex and sexuality for obvious reasons. Other items such as keys, horseshoe charms, coins, roots, pyrite, etc... may also be added for their symbolic value.

In times past, the bones were often tossed into a circle drawn on the ground; however, modern bone readers are more inclined to toss them onto a specially marked cloth. Sometimes this cloth may even be the hide of an animal.

The Astrology Connection

Bone reading may be connected to Astrology through the bones themselves. In astrology, each body part is ruled by a different sign and each sign is ruled by a different planet so a bone associated with a certain sign / planet can carry the same correspondences as the bone. For example

  • Aries / Mars / The Head
  • Taurus / Venus / The Neck
  • Gemini / Mercury / The Arms
  • Cancer / The Moon / The Chest
  • Leo / The Sun / The Heart / Spine
  • Virgo / Mercury / The Bowles
  • Libra / Mercury / The Kidneys
  • Scorpio / Pluto / The Sex Organs
  • Sagittarius / Jupiter / The Hips and Thighs
  • Capricorn / Saturn / The Knees
  • Aquarius / Uranus / The Ankles
  • Pisces / Neptune / The Feet

So a racoon penis bone might have the same correspondences as Scorpio and represent intense passion, brooding, mystery, and transformation.  In like fashion, a chicken breast bone may can represent a person who is a Cancer Star Sign in a reading or simply someone who is emotional and empathetic. Finally, a chicken neck bone could represent those qualities associated with Taurus.

The Houses of Astrology

Another way bone reading can connect to Astrology is by the houses of astrology. When operating the bones, they may be cast onto a cloth that has a blank astrological chart embroidered, painted, or drawn upon it.  A bone can then be read in relation to the astrological house that it falls in. For example, let us say that a skull bone falls in the 6th house. This could be read in a way similar to Mars in the 6th House.

The sixth house rules work and Mars is about how we use our energy and passion. The skull bone (Aries) in the 6th house can mean having more energy for work or being more busy than usual. Work has to be done in an organized and logical manner (the 6th house is associated with Virgo). You might have more problems with your co-workers or be more competitive with them.

These are just a few ways in which Astrology can be used in conjunction with Bone reading in such a way that they compliment each other and bring a new dimension to both practices.
