Jupiter Conjunct Pluto

Jupiter Conjunct Pluto

An Exercise in Understanding Aspects

Jupiter formed an exact conjunction to Pluto on November 12th at 12:13 PM (Pacific Time). This is the third time this year that this aspect activated. The first two times occurred on April 4th and June 30th.  Due to the relative speed of each planet this is an aspect which occurs roughly once every 13 years. The last time these two planets formed a conjunction was in 2007 and the last time they formed a conjunction in Capricorn was in 1771!

What is an Aspect ?

An aspect is a term used by Astrologers to denote the relationship between two planets. There are many aspects but the Major ones are Conjunctions, Sextiles, Squares, Trines, and Oppositions. These aspects can be divided into two categories. They are:

  • Hard Aspects - Hard Aspects are said to be difficult and they provide us with opportunities for growth. Hard aspects include Squares and Oppositions.
  • Soft Aspects- Soft Aspects are said to be easy and they are said to be gentle and more auspicious. Soft aspects include Sextiles and Trines.
Conjunction can be either hard or soft.

Pluto Conjunct Jupiter

To begin forming an idea of what this aspect means, we must first consider the nature of the conjunction. The main keyword for conjunctions is blends. However, other keywords associational with this aspect include: beginnings, new cycles, initiations, pioneer, consolidate, concentrate, intensify, strengthen, empower, emphasize, prominence, focus, unify.

Next we consider the keywords of the planets involved

  • Jupiter (I Expand)Expansion, abundance, chance, cheerful, education, faith, gambling, growth, hope, luck, optimism, philosophy, religion, truth-seeker, success, wisdom, benevolent, broad-minded, generous, sporting, jovial, big.
  • Pluto (I Transform) - Change renewal, transformation, compulsion, destruction, urges, endings, intensity, jealousy, manipulative, power, rebirth, change, violence, regeneration, domination, repression, healing, controlling, revelation, shadow, repression.

Then we begin to string our keywords together. For example

Planet 1 + Aspect + Planet 2

  • I expand blends with I transform
  • Growth intensifies renewal
  • Gambling strengthens jealousy
  • Generosity focuses power

Now we would meditate on these statements and re-write them in our own words. For example, let's meditate on the statement "growth intensifies renewal". Pluto is the planet of change and transformation, when it touches another planet it signifies that whatever is represented by that planet will be changed in some way. Jupiter is the planet of growth and expansion, but also abundance. When Jupiter Conjuncts Pluto we get an abundance of change and transformation. This usually occurs through a process of destruction followed by creation; or endings and new beginnings.

We might re-write and expand on this statement by saying that "the more effort you put into growth the more you will be renewed"  or "some part of your life will go through a lot of changes that will result in positive growth."

On thing that I find helpful to do is if you are having trouble with a statement is the flip the keywords. For example:

  • Instead of - Gambling strengthen jealousy
  • Try - Jealousy strengthens gambling
So another meaning of Jupiter Conjunct Pluto could be that you are so jealous of something that other people have that you are willing to take more risk in order to have it for yourself.

The Influence of Capricorn

The sign the aspect occurs in will color how the aspect manifest. Since this is an conjunction, we only have to consider one sign: Capricorn. Let us then consider the keywords for Capricorn, which are conservative, formal, responsible, reliable, disciplined, hard-working, cautious, objective, brooding, respectful, cold, ambitious, efficient.

We will take our statement from above and incorporate our keywords for Capricorn into our statement. For example:

"Some part of your life will go through a lot of changes that will result in positive growth. Jealously of others may increase your willingness to take chances in order to have what you desire. You may need to  exercise caution and objectivity so as not to become obsessed with obtaining success."

The House is Where is Happens

Up until now, we are aware that some type of change is on the horizon, however, in order to look at what shape or form this change may assume we look to the Natal House in which the conjunction occurs.

For example, let us say that Capricorn is your third house. Now we consider the keywords for the third house, which are communication in all its forms (thinking, writing, speaking, etc... ) as well as siblings, local travel, teachers and community events.

Finally, we incorporate these keywords into the interpretation we have already compiled above. For example:

"The way you think, speak, and communicate will go through a lot of changes that will ultimately result in positive growth - though it may not seem so at the time. Change can often be difficult, so you may experience setbacks as old thought patterns or manners of speech or writing are reformed into new ones. You may find that you react to others more quickly or slowly than usual as you adapt. You can also expect possible misunderstandings with others, especially siblings or neighbors. Jealously of others may increase your willingness to take chances in order to have what you desire. You may need to  exercise caution and objectivity so as not to become obsessed with obtaining success."

How will the conjunction of Jupiter and Pluto manifest for you?
