MIPC: Fred's Special Dream

Fred reads to Lamont from his Lucky Dream Book

  • Medium: Sanford and Son
  • Season: 02 E 01
  • Episode Title: By the Numbers
  • Description: Freeloading family and friends flock to fleece the golden sheep when Fred plays the numbers.

The Spell or Belief

Let me explain the dream. I looked it up in Lucky Lucille's Dream Book. See here? Wait a minute. I'll find it here. I was reading it this morning. Oh, here it is. See what it says? "Riding on a bus or a train. Number 219.  If you dream you are riding on a bus or a train, it means good fortune will smile on you this day."

The Analysis

I can't count the number of time subjects like Astrology, mojo bags, and lucky dreams are used as a plot point in Sanford and Son. I feel that these subjects not only reflect the times and place in question as well as Redd Fox's personal experiences with these matters.

Lucky Dreams books such as Lucky Lucille's Dream Book, Aunt Sally's Policy Players Dream Book, and Kansas City Kitty are used to catch lucky numbers by interpreting your dreams. These books often draw a correlations between elements in one's dreams and lucky numbers in exactly the way that Fred describes in the scene.  Sometimes they are said to contain relative digits or follow-ups, that is numbers which are likely to follow a winning number.

There are many dream books on the market but not all of them are lucky dream books - meaning that they only tell you what a dream means but does not provide any numbers associated with the dream. I own two dream books. They are Aunt Sally's Policy Players Dream Book and Papa Jim's Dream Book.

For instance, Papa Jim's book explains that to dream of grass is a sign of long life and a happy marriage. By Contrast, Aunt Sally's dream book relates grass to poverty and a clear conscience. She assigns it the numbers 1,8, & 17.

You must be careful which one you choose to use. Many folks have their favorite and won't use anything else. Other people feel that luck is something that comes and go and when one book no longer produces winning numbers that will switch to another lucky dream book.

When I was an In-Store-Coordinator with Winn Dixie in Beaufort, South Carolina in 2005 I met many little old ladies who came in with their dream books. Sometimes when they couldn't pull number from their own dreams, they would ask me about my own and play the numbers they found in their dream books.

One woman taught me two important things about lucky numbers which I will now share with you.

1) To get someone to give you a lucky number, you write their name on a piece of paper and place this under your bed. When you next interact with that person they will mention I number without you prompting them. Whatever number they mention, you should play.

2) When ever you receive a lucky number you should play that number every day for up to 7 days or until it wins.
