Chrion: The Wounded Healer

Chiron: The Wounded Healer

Chiron isn't a planet but rather a comet that orbits the sun. It is so named after the Centaur in Greek Mythology who was known for his knowledge of medicine and the healing arts.

Chiron was accidentally shot with a poison arrow but was unable to heal his own wound. Due to the fact that he was immortal, Chiron could not die and so he suffered unbearable pain. In the end, he gave up his immortality in exchange for  Prometheus's freedom and joined the Gods on Mt. Olympus.

In astrology, Chiron is associated with all aspects of health, healing, transformation  and wholeness. Technically Chiron doesn't rule any signs, but some astrologers believe it to be the true ruler of Virgo instead of Mercury.  Astrologers believe that everyone is either born with a wound or develops one early in life that they must confront and heal this one to achieve wholeness. Typically our wound is something psychological or emotional that we either try to ignore, deny, or even be consciously unaware of.

Interpreting Chiron in the Chart.

Method One

Chiron is interpreted in the same way as other planets in the chart. That is, Chiron represents what is happening, the Sign he occupies represents how it is happening, and finally the house he occupies represents where it is happening.

Just like the other planets have their own mantra, such as I am (the Sun), I feel (the Moon), or I think (Mercury), Chiron has it's own mantra and it is I heal. Knowing this we can use plug the keywords for the Signs and Houses into our interpretative formula to better understand what Chiron means in our charts for our own healing.

For Example.

Chiron + Aries + 6th House

I Heal + I Am + Health and Work

When a person has Chiron in Aries and the First House they heal themselves through the work that they do. Such a person may have been born into a family or felt from an early age that they had to be perfect in order to be loved and respected. For this reason they paid attention to the people around them so as to learn their likes, dislikes and other needs in order to be helpful and supportive of their loved ones and not to upset those around them. They often take the initiative and are leaders their work place which gives them a sense of empowerment. They are also employed in a type of position in which they support others or an industry in which they provide services of a helpful nature to others. They may even work with animals. They like routine and anything that disrupts their routine upsets them very much.

Method Two

Another way to look at Chiron is to regard the Sign it is in as the wound that hurt them and the House as representative of the cure for what ails them. For example

Chiron + Taurus + 5th House

Taurus is associated with money and material possessions. However, many people forget that Taurus is also associated with our personal values and our sense of self worth. A person with Chiron in Taurus may suffer from low self-esteem or negative sense of self worth. This may or may not be related to their concept of money and material things. They may feel that having money and things of value makes them feel better about themselves and who they are. For this reason they may also feel that no matter how much money they have it is never enough.  The Fifth house is associated with our creativity, self-expression, hobbies, talents, and children.

With this in mind, a person with Chiron in Taurus and the 5th house may suffer from low-self esteem or a negative sense of self. They may hold on to materialistic sense of personal values. Such a person may heal themselves through engaging in art therapy, developing a creative hobby, or spending time with children.  Alternately, they may evolve by getting in touch with their inner-child  through creative endeavors.

Aspect to Chiron

Aspects, or relationships between planets are another dimension of astrological interpretation that should be considered.  Aspects between Chiron and other planets are interpreted in the same manner as aspects between other planets and positions in the Natal Chart.

For example:

Chiron Conjunct The Sun

I Heal Melds with I Am

Whereas Chiron is associated with our wound and the Sun is associated with our identity, a person born with Chiron conjunct the Sun may be born with or develop a victim mentality. Nothing is ever their fault, someone is always doing something to them, and they are always the victim or a person, organization, or system. Such a person may either consciously or subconsciously attract people and situations in which they find themselves "victimized." or they may develop a martyr complex. In this case, the key to wholeness and healing is to take responsibility for their lives and stop allowing themselves to be victimized.

Where is Chiron in your chart and what does it say about your would and how you can heal it?
