The Great Conjunction

A conjunction is a type of aspect, or relationship between two planets, in which the planets concerned occupy the same degree of the same sign at the same time. The conjunction of Jupiter and Saturn is referred to as a Great Conjunction due to it's rarity in that it occurs once every twenty years. It is also of significance in that the conjunction of these two powerful planets occurs just as they leave the cardinal-earth sign of Capricorn and enter the mutable-air sign of Aquarius. In addition, the conjunction occurs at the critical degree of 0. Planets in the critical degrees of 0 and 29 are thought to be more powerful and carry more weight in the chart.

Jupiter Conjunct Saturn

To better understand the nature of this conjunction, let us first focus on the aspect it's self. A conjunction is an aspect that heralds something new or a renewal.  A conjunction amplifies and blends the energies of the two planets concerned.

In this case, it is Jupiter, the planet of expansion and Saturn, the planet of limitation. So what we have here is a union of opposites - the irresistible force and the immoveable object - which will come together in an explosion of renewed energy, creating something completely new, and will have to figure out how to work together in unison.

When Jupiter conjuncts Saturn it results in ambitious growth, but it is a growth that occurs in a responsible and disciplined manner. People are more optimistic and eager for change, but they also understand that it must come about in through patience and hard work.

The Aquarius Connection

The conjunction of Jupiter and Saturn occurs in the sign of Aquarius and it colors how the aspect can manifest. Aquarius represents the archetype of the activist and humanitarian. It is associated with the groups of like minded people, with the unusual, the unconventional, and the future itself.

So as the planets shift from the cold, reserved, traditional energies of  Capricorn to the more unconventional, original, and altruistic energies of Aquarius, people become more excited and ambitious about humanitarian causes. They want to make the world a better place, but they understand that it can't  and won't happen over night. They understand that in order make a better future, like-minded people need to work together, they need maintain their optimism, and the need to exercise  both patience and discipline.

The House is Where it Happens

Up until now, we are aware that some type of renewal is on the horizon, however, in order to look at what shape or form this change may assume for the individual we need to look to the Natal House in which the conjunction occurs.
