Money Drawing Mojo Bag
"I want you to get a small bag of the skin of chamois. In it, place this piece of lodestone and John the conqueror root. Tie it with a piece of devil's shoestring. And in your right hand, sprinkle 5 drops of holy oil. Keep the bag next to your skin."

Eve's Bayou

Context

Eve's Bayou takes place in Louisiana in the 1960. Mozelle Batiste is a gifted reader, although she refers to her self as a psychic counselor. In this scene an aged woman named Madame Renard comes to Mozelle for a reading. She is told that her money is all gone and that her niece spent it all. Madame Renard questions how she will live and begs Mozelle for help. Mozelle rises and goes to a box on the far side of the room and removes a piece of High John Root giving it to Madame Renard with the above instructions.  Later in an unrelated scene, Mozelle's brother (a doctor) visits Madame Renard and we see that she is wearing a leather bag around her neck --- presumably the mojo bag prescribed by Mozelle.

The Analysis

Both High John Root and Devil's Shoestrings have been used in Hoodoo for drawing money through business, gambling, or personal power; and lodestones are used to attract things that you desire. Therefore, these are wise choices. However, I might add a few other items to this mojo bag such as chamomile flowers, which is said to increase the power of money drawing roots and herbs. I might also substitute Money Drawing Oil and or Money Stay With me Oil in place of the Holy Oil as prescribed above. Lastly, rather than tie the bag shut with the Devil's Shoe Strings, I would include it inside the bag.

In her book Hoodoo Herb and Root Magic, Cat Yronwode gives the following recipes using High John Root and Devil's Shoe Strings:

  • Wrap John the Conqueror Root, nine small pieces of Devil's Shoe Strings root and a Silver Mercury Dime in a $2.00 bill, folding the bill towards you, not away from you. Fix in a a red mojo bag and anoint with Van Van Oil. Wear it when playing the lottery or betting on horses, or place it near the door of your place of business to draw money to you through personal power.
  • Place a whole High John the Conqueror Root and seven Devil's Shoestrings in whiskey for seven days and rub your money with this liquid before going out to gamble.

As it stands, I believe this is a very good three-ingredient money drawing mojo bag and if prepared correctly, it should produce the desires results.
