What Does Retrograde Mean?

A planet is retrograde when it appears to move backwards across the cosmos from our perspective on Earth. We mostly hear about retrograde in relation to Mercury which occurs three times a year and last for roughly three weeks each time. Generally speaking, retrograde are times of REsearch, REview, REvision, REconsideration, and REevaluation relating to the urges or energies of the planet in question. 

Saturn Retrograde  (Aquarius / Capricorn) 

May 11th, 2020 to September 29th, 2020

Saturn Retrograde began in 1° Aquarius. Saturn is the planet that seeks out structure and stability. He is all about discipline and order. With Saturn in Retrograde you can expect delays in any effort to grow on your part --- or the part of others for that matter. Such delays teach us patience and gives us the opportunity to review any changes we would like to make. This is a good time to review our long-term goals for the future and any plans we may have for success and achievement. Trying to move forward now can actually make us fall behind.

Saturn Retrograde in Capricorn 

In modern astrology, Saturn is a planet associated with discipline and responsibility. Transits of Saturn can feel like we have been chewed up and spit out but it is often for our own good.  In this respect I see Saturn as a teacher very much like the character of Severus Snape in the Harry Potter books. Severus is a gruff, rude, rigid, and unyielding disciplinarian. He is countered by Albus Dumbledore (a kind of Jupiter figure) who is open-minded, benevolent, permissive, and generous.  However, the thing that they both have in common is that they both care about Harry Potter, in their own way and for their own reasons, and they both want to protect him and see him succeed.   

When Saturn stations retrograde, we begin to (re)think about our responsibilities,  (re)assess our limitations and (re)evaluate our goals.  Saturn retrograde calls on you to take a look at where there is imbalance in your life and how to bring back that balance.  Is your love life suffering because you devote so much time to work? Is your work unsatisfying because you play too much? To create and maintain harmony will take some give and take or practice and experimentation to figure out what works best for you. The area of life that Capricorn falls in your Natal chart is the area of life where the most action will take place.

Saturn Retrograde brings the opportunity for us to redefine, restructure, or reorganize some area of our life in some way. When Mars (I Act) is in Capricorn (I Use) people are more driven to be successful in their careers. Capricorn is a cardinal sign which means that it thrives on action and needs to be doing something in order to be satisfied. Capricorn's element is also earth so people can take all that energy and drive and focus it on their long term goals. They are also able to make plans now to achieve their goals. It's important, however, that they don't get tunnel vision and get so focused on the goal that they fail to enjoy their present success.  In addition to drive and ambition, Mars is also the planet of aggression and passion and in the sign of it's exaltation it is much more powerful. The transit of Mars through Capricorn can result in conflicts with your boss, mentor, or parents (especially your father or a father figure).

Aspects or relationships between planets is another dimension of astrological interpretation that should be considered. For example, let's say that Mars at 0° Capricorn is applying a trine to natal Mercury at 3° Virgo. A trine is type of aspect in which the energy of one planet is supportive of the urge of another planet. Usually it is the slower planet having an effect on the faster planet.

You can also be more persuasive with your words now, so you are more likely to stand up for any idea, issue, or cause that you believe in and back up your position with eloquence and passion. 

Ruler of the House 

Finally, let us look at the ruler of the house. In astrology, Mars rules Aries, so the house that Aries is in in your Natal Chart represents the area of life that will most be affected by the ingress of Mars into Capricorn. For example, in my own natal chart Aries is in the 6th house and Capricorn is in my 3rd house. In this case, it would be said that the ruler of the 3rd house is in the 6th house. What this means is that the activities of the 3rd house serve the urge of the 6th house. This can be translated as "thought processes, communication, and self expressions serves daily habits, routine, and health."

Using this statement as our baseline, we extrapolate on this sentence and might say something like Your thoughts are oriented towards your daily habits and routine. Your ability to successfully communicate with others affects your work for the better and helps you get along with your co-workers and boss. You have a curious and efficient mind and observe other people and apply your observations to your daily routine.

A New Moon occurs when the Sun and Moon both occupy the same degree of the same sign at the same time. As you can see from the chart above both the Sun and Moon are transiting 4° Capricorn making this a new Moon.  With  a grouping of five planets transiting through Capricorn (called a stellium) there is a lot of energy pouring into Capricorn giving it more strength and power. 

A New Moon bring new possibilities. When the New Moon is in Capricorn people begin to focus more on their career and they become more ambitious, disciplined, and hard-working.  They may be more concerned with advancing in their chosen profession. They may meet with a boss or mentor for some kind of end-of-year review with the hopes of more responsibility, more power, and more money. They may also work on their long term goals. If it seems that their current job cannot satisfy their ambitions, they may consider a new job or life direction in general.

Looking at the chart above we see that the New Moon chart features a Grand Earth Trine between the New Moon in Capricorn, Uranus in Taurus, and the Virgo Ascendant.  With a configuration such as this people can be somewhat more sentitive but the trine / earth energy gives them the ability to control their emotions. You're more creative and imaginative and it shows. You also have the ability to channel your creativity and imagination into something useful.

Sun in Capricorn (General) 

The Sun enters Capricorn tonight announcing heralding the Winter Solstice and therefore the beginning of Winter.  Perhaps it should not surprise you, dear reader, then that when the Sun enters Capricorn people become colder - both figuratively and literally. With another year almost behind them, people may feel older, and more responsible. They may settle into a more practical mood or mindset and turn their attention and interest to their financial affairs, set new responsibilities for themselves, and become more determined. 

As you can see from the chart above The Sun and Jupiter are about 4 degrees apart and therefore applying a conjunction between the two planets.  The expansive energy of Jupiter amplifies the confidence, creativity, and power of the Sun. For the short time this aspect is active, people may feel more confident and so this is also a good time to start something new or to accept new opportunities and make the best of them.

The Aspects, or relatonship between planets is another dimensions of astrological interpretation that is to be considered. I've already touched upon the aspects in the transit chart above, however, one should also look at the aspects between the planets in the transit chart and those in one's birth chart. For example, The Sun in 0° Capricorn is applying an opposition to Saturn in 3° Cancer. 

Saturn is called the Great Teacher and when he touches another point or position in your chart you are presented with a lesson designed to help you grow, mature ane evolve. Unfortunatley, these lessons often come in the form of some kind of challenge or difficulty that we must overcome. When the Transit Sun makes an opposition to Natal Saturn you experience blockages and obstacles that present a blow to your ego. This is a time to strive for making better decisions an living more responsibly.
