A Little Science 

Neptune is the second to last planet in our solar system. It takes about 165 years to complete  a full circuit through the zodiac and spends roughly 14 years in each sign. It goes retrograde once a year and it's retrograde period last anywhere from 4 to 5 months each time. 

In 2019 Neptune goes retrograde on June 21st in 18° 43 Pisces at 1:37 PM (Pacific Time) and will not station direct (i.e. move forward) again until November 27th. 

A Little Metaphysics 

Neptune's mantra is I dream and it represents the urge to escape the mundane and ordinary. The keywords associated with Neptune include but are not limited to Compassion, Confusion, Perception, Perspective, Deception, Dreams, Fantasy, Escapism, Ideas, Illusions, Imagination, Mystic, Visionary, Sensitive, Unknown, Spirituality. 

Neptune is said to Rule Pisces, in Detriment in Virgo, Exaltation in Cancer, and Fall in Capricorn. 

In the Tarot, Neptune is associated with the Hanged Man.  

A Little Astrology

Neptune in known as the Great Dissolver, it is associated with dreams, perceptions, imagination and our creativity. Because Neptune is one of the generational planets (meaning that it is so far out in the solar system and moves so slowly) its affect on us is not as severe and the faster mover planets such as Mercury.   

When Neptune is in Pisces people are more compassionate, withdrawn, intuitive, and sympathetic to others. People are more apt to lose themselves into their spirituality or their sense of spirituality. There is a tendency to lend aid to others but only as far as one can retain a certain amount of anonymity. People prefer to work behind the scenes and avoid the spotlight. 

However, when Neptune is in retrograde it forces you to turn around and face your doubts and fears. All the compassion and sympathy you have for others and the desire to help them should now be directed to yourself. Just like the Hanged Man above you need to look at things from a new perspective, face the reality of your life and release any illusions you may have. It may be somewhat painful to face down our illusion but just like the Hanged Man in the picture above it looks more painful than it actually is and, if done successfully, you will grow and prosper from the experience. 

Where Neptune falls in your natal chart is the area of life where you receive a big reality check and should be the area of life you review and examine to see what illusions or false perception you have allowed yourself to fall for.

Pluto Retrograde 2019

Pluto stations retrograde in Capricorn at 11:48 am (Pacific) on 4/24/19. What this means is that, from our perspective on earth, Pluto appears to move backwards across the sky.  Pluto retrograde happens about once a year and last anywhere from four to five months at a time. 

So named after the God of the Underworld in mythology, Pluto is associated with transformation and renewal. Such change is not always pleasant or even peaceful.  Transits of Pluto are often marked by periods of destruction followed by some form of renewal and regeneration. In this respect, I see Pluto as being very similar to The Tower card in the Tarot. The Tower is all about tearing down something old so that something newer, stronger, and better can take it's place. Examples of this kind of action in nature include intentional forest fires which cause the trees to grow back stronger, or cutting dead leaves off a plant so that it can thrive.  Another example of transformation through violence can be seen in the Stonewall Riots that sparked the Gay Liberation Movement, or the American Revolution that gave birth to the United States. 

When Pluto is moving forward, it can bring secrets to light and hidden truths are revealed. Often such truths are shocking or hard to accept and we are left to deal with the aftermath of the destruction that they bring. We are left to pick up the pieces and make sense of it all. However, when these things happen they are often for the greater good and are designed to help us grow, to thrive, to become stronger and better than we were before. So, perhaps it is a necessary evil. 

When Pluto stations retrograde, our attention turns inward and we are moved to reflect on our darker, more secretive natures. We are challenged to rid ourselves of that which does not serve us, to release that which holds us back, to let go of our secret shame.  If we ignore our shadow selves, we may be confronted by them in the form of qualities we see in others that we do not like. Internal conflict with the self can lead to external disputes with others. Our thoughts may turn to our sense of personal power. We may ask ourselves what makes me feel powerful? What makes me feel powerless? We may take steps to obtain more power over ourselves and in our lives in general. 

Where Capricorn falls in your birth chart is the area of life that is most affected. For example, Capricorn represents the 3rd house in my birth chart (I use the whole house system). The third house naturally aligns with Gemini in the natural chart and is ruled by Mercury. The third house is all about the capacity of our minds, how we exchange and process information, our self-expression, and short journeys. 

Now Pluto retrograde has not occurred as of yet but its effects can be felt in the period just before the retrograde as the Planets slows down, comes to a stop, and then begins moving backwards. This period is called the pre-shadow. During the pre-shadow we feel the first beginnings of the effect of the retrograde. Recently, I got into a bit of trouble at my day job over an email I sent to a client that was misconstrued as "unprofessional" which was not my intention.  While the incident was smoothed over, I now see that Pluto Retrograde in my 3rd house is giving me the opportunity to meditate on my communication skills.  So I will definitely be more careful how I frame my words (both spoken and written) over the next 5 months.

Jupiter Retrograde April 2019

Jupiter Retrograde

You may be familiar with the term retrograde and usually hear this term associated with Mercury as in Mercury Retrograde. It may surprise you, however, that Mercury isn't the only planet that goes retrograde. In fact, with the exception of the Sun and Moon, all the planets go retrograde at some point. When a planet goes retrograde, it means that --- from our perspective on earth --- the planet appears to reverse its course across the sky moving backwards through the cosmos. 

Jupiter goes retrograde about once a year and generally last anywhere from four to five months. The next Jupiter Retrograde will occur on 4/10/19 at 10:01 AM Pacific in 24 degrees Sagittarius. 

When a planet goes retrograde it changes the meaning of that planet in our charts.  Jupiter is known as the planet of Luck, Expansion, and Optimism.  When Jupiter goes retrograde this is a time when we should refrain from taking too many risks, and our optimism should be temepered with a little skepticism. If something seems too good to be true, it probably is..... 

Jupiter is said to rule Sagittarius so the effects of Jupiter Retrograde in Sagittarius is stronger than that of the other signs. With Jupiter in Sagittarius we can expect issues of foreign lands and people to come under scrutiny, as well as those issues surrounding philosophy, religion, and the law being discussed and debated in the microcosm of our daily lives and the macrocosm of the world at large. 

Obviously, however, Jupiter Retrograde will affect everyone differently depending on where transit Jupiter falls in your natal chart.

For example with Jupiter Retrograde in the second house of wealth, money, and our personal value system this is a good time to review your relationship with money and the things that you value. You might consider new and different ways to make money or increase the value of your possessions in some way. You may also take this time to reevaluate your personal values and how they have or have not supported your goals in life --- especially those related to money and how you define success. 

Jupiter will station direct on 8/11/19 in 14 degrees Sagittarius.
