Aries- You're more of a workaholic this month pouring all your energy into what it is that you do. You feel more efficient, organized, and goal oriented. You can accomplish a great deal of work now with the right plan and attention to details. 

Taurus- You're less inclined towards work this month and would rather have more fun. You spend more time now socializing, dating, or engaging in your hobbies or other past times of interest. 

Gemini- You're more of a homebody this month. You spend more time at home either alone cleansing, organizing, or (re)arranging your living space or with your loved one's sharing more quality time and or reminiscing. 

Cancer - Your mind races this month with new thoughts and new ideas. You are more talkative and engage with others more on a mental level. You crave mental action and have to stay busy or else you get bored and frustrated. 

Leo- You could be presented with an opportunity to make more money this month, which is important to you. Having money makes you feel more secure and confident in yourself and having more money means more security, more self-confidence, and greater self-esteem.

Virgo- You are feeling more confident and self-assured this month. You have more energy and you attract a lot more attention. You feel refreshed and renewed. You may change your hair or clothing to stand out more.

Libra- You shy away from the world now to be alone with your thoughts. You may spend more time in meditation or practicing healing arts. This is a good time to confront and heal emotional or physical baggage.

Scorpio- You identify more with your friends this month and spend more time with them. You're more social and prefer to engage in more group activities that one-on-one pursuits. These relationships will prove to be valuable to you in some way. 

Sagittarius- You're feeling more ambitious this month and this is a good time for taking advantage of opportunities to advance your career. You're boss or mentor is more favorable of you now and may entrust you with more responsibility. 

Capricorn- You feeling more philosophical this month and are keen to explore mental realms and consider big ideas. You feel the urge to travel, to see new places, meet new people, and expose yourself to new ideas. 

Aquarius- You feel a greater than usual need of passion and intimacy this month. You want to make a profound and powerful connection with someone else. This can heat up in the bedroom and you find anyone dark and mysterious attractive and desirable. 

Pisces- Relationships heat up this month. You are eager to have a happy, healthy, relationship with someone special. If you are partnered, you're more willing to compromise and let your partner shine in the relationship. If you are single, you can reassess what you're looking for in a partner, what is important to you and what is not.

Astrological Plackets

Astrological Plackets 

I first learned about plackets in the mid 1990's when I obtained a copy of Ray Buckland's Advanced Candle Magick.  

Placket comes from an Old English word meaning vagina. They are simply two squares of cloth which have been sewn on three sides forming a pocket. If you are not handy with needle and thread you ca purchase paper greeting card envelopes in various colors which you can leave as they are or further decorate with drawings, collage, stencils, or ink stamps to name a few (see below) 

They are used in spells and rituals to hold certain items such as photographs, petition-papers, name-papers, affirmative prayers, or small objects  such as charms, gemstones, or dried roots while you are working towards your goal or attempting to manifest your intentions represented by whatever you place inside the placket.  When creating your placket(s) you may wish to keep color correspondences in mind and match the color of your placket to your goal. For example 

• White- Protection, healing, cleansing, blessing, all purpose.

• Yellow- Creativity, communication, compelling.

• Pink- Romance, friendship, happiness.

• Orange- Employment, activation, stimulation.

• Red- Health, passion, lust, strength, love.

• Purple- Power, success, independence, spirits.

• Brown- Friendship, law, stability, order.

• Blue- Truth, justice, mental health, wisdom, wishes.

• Green- Abundance, physical health, luck, prosperity

• Black- Banishing, binding, protection, cursing.

In terms of Astrology, you can also make use of  astral colors 

In addition, you can further decorate your placket with astrological symbols for the 10 Planets and the 12 astrological signs. This can be done by painting the symbols on your placket, embroidering them with needed and thread or sewing the symbols on them in the manner of a patch. 

For example, let us say that you wish to attract more love and romance into your life. You might craft a red placket (for love) and embroider the symbol for Venus (the planet of love and romance) in green thread. Then you would place something in the placket symbolizing your goal. Some choices may include but are not limited to the following. 

1. a photo of a specific person you wish to love you 
2. a wish list of qualities of the type of person you wish to attract 
3. a specially chosen bible verse that you have written on paper 
4. a petition paper 
5. a sigil drawn on paper 
6. a hand-drawn Magic Square 
7. a magical seal, such as a Seal of Solomon 

Next you might five-spot the item with Venus Astrological Oil (or a condition oil such as Lavender Love, or Come to Me) place the item inside your placket alone or with something else such as small piece of rose quartz, or a Queen Elizabeth Root, etc... Place the placket on your altar between two candles. On the left you might put a green candle dressed with Venus Oil and on the right an Astral Candle dressed with the corresponding Astrological Sign Oil  

For example, let us say that the specific person you want to attract is a Taurus. The astral color for Taurus is also green, so you would etch their name on a green candle and dress this with Taurus Oil. Now let us say that you don't have any specific person in mind but that you want someone who has Leo like qualities. Then you would carve the words my lover on an orange candle and dress this with Leo Oil. 

If you don't have the time, energy, or inclination to make several plackets, you may wish to simply create two: one for attracting and blessing and another for banishing and cursing. For this purpose, I suggest using a white placket for attracting and blessing and a black one for banishing and cursing. To pull in astrological energies you can sew a black circle on the white placket representing the New Moon - this placket will be for attracting and blessing. Next, you can decorate the black placket with a white circle which will be used for banishing and cursing (see photo above)

The Moon is not happy in Scorpio as it is said to be in Fall. What this means is that it is occupying the astrological sign which is in opposition to the astrological sign in which it is exalted. . The Moon is exalted in Taurus which is six signs away from Scorpio making the Moon in Fall in Scorpio. When a planet is in Fall, it means that it must find alternate resources in order to reach its full potential. 

When the Moon is in Scorpio people are more emotional, passionate, and secretive - especially about shared resources like credit cards, debt, or joint bank accounts.  Their emotions are more intense and they usually center around deep, hidden issues. They can alternate between emotional extremes. They want more intimacy, and can be more possessive and jealous of things which they think belong to them.

Mercury is said to rule Virgo, therefore this is a very strong placement for the planet that governs the exchange of ideas and information. When Mercury is in Virgo, people's thoughts are centered on their work. They are more detail oriented, but may be unable to see the big picture before them.  Their thinking is more logical and they are usually more efficient and get more done. They may engage in more communication with their co-workers, especially thought text, phone calls, and emails in addition to one-one-one conversations. Anything dealing with writing or technology is easier now.

The New Moon in Leo 

Leo aligns with the 5th house in the natural chart, this is the area which governs love, children, and creativity. When the moon is  in Leo, people are more interested in having fun and less interested in work. They socialize more, date more, and spend more time with friends or at home engaging in some kind of creative hobby. If they have children, they cold spend more time with them. However, if they don't have any children they can get back in touch with their own inner child. People can be more dramatic and do things in a big, dramatic manner. When the New Moon is in Leo this can it can indicate the beginning of a new romance, you could start a new hobby or revisit an old one that brings you creative satisfaction.

Let us suppose that you have Scorpio Rising, then the New Moon in Leo would occur in your 10th house which governs the public, fame, honors, reputation, awards, boundaries, discipline, and authority. With the new moon in your 10th house, your career is highlighted and there is the possibility of advancement, a change in life direction, or important business with your boss, mentor, or parents. A Raise or promotion is possible.

Sanford and 'Strology

Sanford & 'Strology

This will be the first in a series of blog posts in which I explore the role of Astrology in works of fiction such as television shows, comic books, literature, and other sources. 

Today we will be discussing Sanford and Son, Season 3 Episode 2 Libra Rising All Over Lamont. 

In this episode, Lamont feels that he is in a rut and needs life direction. So, on the recommendation of his friend Rollo, he goes to visit an Astrologer named Miss Audrey in order to learn more about his true personality. Miss Audrey takes a look at his birth information which Lamont copied out of the family bible which is given as September 27th, 1940 at 5:50 AM. Using only this information and without producing a Natal Chart, Miss Audrey discerns that Lamont is a Libra and his Ascendant, or Rising Sign is Libran as well - making him a double Libran. 

Miss Audrey explains that "This means that you should strive for harmony and equilibrium. Peace is the keyword for you. You shouldn’t argue with anyone at all if you can help it."  She then asks if he has to haggle a lot in his work (in the junk business) and Lamont says no but that he does argue a lot with his father, Fred, who constantly insults him. Miss Audrey explains to Lamont that "Libra is the scales, balance, harmony, equilibrium.  You can’t help but being in a rut if you’re always arguing. You are living in direct contradiction to yourself. You’re never going to get your life together until you start establishing peach and harmony especially in your home."  

Interestingly, if we produce a Natal Chart using the birth information given in the episode and assuming that Lamont was born in Los Angeles it does in fact show that he has these placements. 

With this advice, Lamont goes home and tries to get along with his father who believes that he is dying after having eaten eight-day old collard greens. In reality, Fred really just has an acute case of gastritis. Lamont tries to get along with his father and appease him but Fred continues to insult him. Fred, believing that he is dying, examines his life by looking through old photo albums and the family bible. When Aunt Ester stops by to pray for Fred they all begin to talk about the past and the circumstances surrounding Lamont's birth. It is Aunt Ester who reveals that Lamont was actually born in the evening and not in the morning as the family bible suggests owning to Fred's bad handwriting. 

With this information, Lamont visits Miss Audrey again who explains that this makes him an Aries Rising. She explains that he is a "born warrior, a general, and commander." She advises him to "be assertive and not let anyone sway you or talk you out of your ideas." Lamont returns home and instead of coddling his father, he orders Fred to get out of bed and go fix supper to which Fred acquiesces ---  but mainly to get away from Aunt Ester and her prayer group who have surrounded his bed to pray over him again. 

Again, using this new birth time we get the following Natal Chart which indicates that Lamont does have Aries Rising. 

Looking at this corrected chart, Lamont has the South Node in the First House meaning he is no stranger to being assertive and independent. Stubbornness, assertiveness, impulsiveness, and independence are qualities that he has brought into his present life from his previous one. This is his comfort zone and behavior that he often falls back on but which  he also needs to evolve from. The South Node in the First House, automatically puts his North Node in the 7th House. This indicates that, in this life, Lamont needs to grow towards diplomacy, compromise, open-mindedness, and nurturing his relationships with others --- which is exactly what he is doing by getting along with his father (although there may be some co-dependency issues between them.) 

This episode aired on September 21st 1973 making Lamont 33 years old. By this time in his life, Lamont had already experienced his first Saturn Return which occurred on May 29th 1970.  The Saturn Return is seen as a time of maturity in a person's life. It occurs around the individual's 29th birthday. At this age, Lamont should have already asked himself the big questions of life, but we can see how his emotional growth could have been stunted by his father. 

Although Lamont's 10th house is empty, meaning there are no planets in it, we can still glean some information from the sign on the 10th cusp. With Capricorn in the 10th house we can divine that Lamont is ambitious with a strong desire for worldly success. He wants to achieve recognition and elevate his status in life. We, the viewer, know from watching the show that Lamont aspires to do more with his life but stays in the  junk business in order to appease his father. 

There are several episodes in which Lamont tries to strike out on his own or pursue his own interests. For example in the previous episode Lamont As Othello, Lamont gets a part in Shakespeare's Othello playing against a white woman - which irks his father Fred. As you can see from the chart above, Lamont has his Moon in Leo and the 5th house. This shows that Lamont expresses his emotions in big, dramatic ways and he enjoys the attention that he gets from how he expresses himself. 

With a majority of his planets in the Northern and Western Hemispheres, Lamont is someone who is private, introverted, and withdrawn who needs someone to motivate or prod him into action. If I were his astrologer, I would encourage Lamont to continue his efforts at acting. What advice would you offer Lamont if you were his astrologer?

When Venus (I Love) is in Cancer (I Feel), people are more emotional but may refrain from giving out their affection too easily.  They want a true romance that is lasting and are interested more in strength, loyalty, and security rather than more transitory relationships (i.e. hit it and quit it). Feelings and values regarding love and romance lean more towards the traditional and they are more patient and determined in their pursuit of love.  Familiar and predictive behavior is favored more when Venus is in Cancer and people are more apt to seek out love in their own community, neighborhood, or family (i.e. my brother's friend) rather than online or through dating apps. 

The House where Cancer falls in your natal chart is the area of life that is being activated when Venus enters Cancer.

For example, let us supposed that you have Natal Venus in 02° Scorpio that would mean that Transit Venus in 0° Cancer is forming a trine to your Natal Venus. A trine is a type of aspect in which the energy or urge of one planets flows in harmony with the energy or urge of another planet. When Transit Venus forms a Trine to Natal Venus you can expect more harmony in your life. Relationships as well as finances improve and you can expect to feel happier, more balanced, and generally satisfied with life. This can be a time in your life when you find that you can manifest your desires with ease.

The sense of humor is more jovial and people generally have a more youthful outlook.

That would mean that Mercury in 0° Leo is applying a Square to Venus in 2° Scorpio. A square is a type of aspect in which the energy or urge of one planets is squaring off against the energy or urge of another planet. 

Mercury Square Natal Venus can translate to mental laziness in that you just don't want to have to think for yourself so you'll likely engage in mentally light activities that don't require too much though on your part such as reading a romance novella that is short on plot and heavy on romance or sexual tension. 

Ruler of the House 

The Ruler of the House should also be considered. To understand the ruler of the House you have to ask yourself two questions. 

1. What Houses does Mercury Rule in my Natal Chart. 
2. What House does Leo occupy in my natal chart. 

Mercury Rules both Virgo and Libra. For the purposes of this blog entry I will focus on Virgo. Let us suppose that you have Scorpio Rising, that would put Virgo in your 11th House and Leo would be in your 10th House. Therefore you would say that the Ruler of the 11th House is in the 10th House. This might be translated as "friends, associations, and connections serve reputation achievement, and a desire for recognition from others."

You might extrapolate on this sentence and say something such as "You rise in your profession because of who you know and not what you know. You make the right connections that help further your career. You gain fame through your friends or because of the social issues your bring to the public's attention. You can turn a cause in to a successful career."

Natural Chart / Whole Houses 

A Full Moon occurs when the Sun and the Moon occupy the same degrees of opposing astrological signs. As you can see from the above Full Moon Chart, the Sun is at 11° Leo and the Moon is 180° away at 11° Aquarius making this a Full Moon. When two planets form an opposition in this manner it creates a division. Two things are being split apart or divided. 

The Big Picture 

Aquarius is associated with groups of like minded individuals. They usually come together for a single purpose which serves the group's interests or agenda and which is greater than that of any one individual. For this reason Aquarius rules over clubs, organizations, friends, groups, and associations. 

On the flipside, Leo is more about the individual. Leo is the dramatic actor who needs to take center stage and get all the attention for themselves. They can be quite territorial!  They are not concerned with the needs of the many (in a general sense here) but rather with their own needs. 

So what we can expect from this Full Moon in Aquarius? Well a divide between the group agenda / needs and the needs of the individual is expected. With the Full Moon in Aquarius friends and associations come under scrutiny and some relationships or associations may come to an end. Alternately, an acquaintance may become a closer friend. People are, generally speaking, less materialistic now and more charitable. People tend to focus on their dreams for the future now as well as their place in the world.  Now is the time to take steps towards realizing ones dreams or abandon them all together for something more realistic.  

Working with Full Moon in Aquarius Energy

• Donate time, money, or energy to a worthy humanitarian cause 
• Sign a petition for a cause that you believe in 
• Join a group that interest you. 
• Start a club or organization that you would want to join. 
• Participate in a Protest March 
• Get involved in local politics 
• Research a topic that you're in interested in (especially if it involves technology or cutting edge science) 
• Give yourself more freedom   

The Personal Touch  

To better understand how the Full Moon in Aquarius will affect you on an individual level you need to look at the houses in which Aquarius and Leo fall in your natal chart. For example, in my own chart Aquarius is in the 4th Natal House and Leo is in the 10th.  These two houses are known as the Angular Houses (along with the 1st and 7th) and these are very powerful houses. The fourth house is known as the Imum Coeli (IC) and the tenth house is known as the Midheaven or Medium Coeli (MC). 

Whereas the IC rules over our home and private life, the MC rules over our public life and reputation. For me, there would seem to be a divide between my sense of privacy and what I share with the public (or how I am perceived by the public). With the Full Moon in the 4th house, endings related to the home and family are indicated. This may also be a situation that I would want to keep from the public or to somehow control the flow of information so as the prevent misunderstanding with the public.  

You can go deeper by checking the aspects between the Full Moon in 11° Aquarius and other points in your natal chart. For example, in my own chart the Transit Moon is making an Opposition to my Natal MC. What this means is that my emotions turn inwards and I will not want to deal with the public or people in general. I'll want to spend more time alone in familiar surroundings (my home) and only have contact with close friends and family members. I may feel more possessive of the people close to me or a strong desire to belong to someone which provides a sense of security
