Mercury Square Natal Venus can translate to mental laziness in that you just don't want to have to think for yourself so you'll likely engage in mentally light activities that don't require too much though on your part such as reading a romance novella that is short on plot and heavy on romance or sexual tension.

The Ruler of the House should also be considered. To understand the ruler of the House you have to ask yourself two questions. 

1. What Houses does Mercury Rule in my Natal Chart. 
2. What House does Leo occupy in my natal chart. 

Mercury Rules both Virgo and Libra. For the purposes of this blog entry I will focus on Virgo. Let us suppose that you have Scorpio Rising, that would put Virgo in your 11th House and Leo would be in your 10th House. Therefore you would say that the Ruler of the 11th House is in the 10th House. This might be translated as "friends, associations, and connections serve reputation achievement, and a desire for recognition from others."

You might extrapolate on this sentence and say something such as "You rise in your profession because of who you know and not what you know. You make the right connections that help further your career. You gain fame through your friends or because of the social issues your bring to the public's attention. You can turn a cause in to a successful career."

The Pre-Shadow is when we can begin to see Mercury start slowing down and this is where we will begin to feel the beginning of Mercury Retrograde. This period of time can be marked by errors in communication, travel, and electronics. These are just general events that usually occur during periods of Mercury Retrograde. The Sign or Signs that Mercury RX occurs in also influences events that occur during Mercury RX. The Pre-Shadow begins in Cancer and this is where people will generally begin to feel the walls closing in on their homes. They may feel stifled or suffocated inside their own homes and start thinking about making changes to improve their home by changing the look and feel of the place in which they live. This is a good period to sit down and brainstorm ideas, sketch out a plan, or start collecting images from magazines, newspapers, and the internet to create a new vision of your living space.  

However, to figure out exactly how Mercury Retrograde will affect you on a personal, individual level, you will need to see what natal house your Cancer is in. The area of life represented by that house is the area of life that will most be affected by Mercury Retrograde. Essentially, those events that occur during the Pre-Shadow will frame your experiences during the retrograde phase. These experiences are believed to be necessary for our own personal growth and soul-evolvement. At the end of the Pre-Shadow, Mercury will come to a complete stop at 14° Cancer and sit there for a few days days before moving again. 

The Retrograde period is when Mercury starts moving again, only from our perspective on Earth it will appear to be moving backwards across the zodiac. It is during this period that we will most strongly feel the effects of Mercury Retrograde. Generally speaking, we can expect communication, travel, and electronics to go all wonky on us. During Mercury Retrograde, we refrained from making any major decisions or changes. Instead we are told to RE-lax, RE-evaluate, and RE-assess our issues and conditions

Generally speaking in addition to feeling the urge to re-new, re-arrange, and re-model our living spaces Mercury Retrograde in Cancer can manifest as opportunities to explore how we nurture and heal ourselves and others. Cancer represents our mothers, so this is a good time to remember, reassess, and reevaluate our relationship with the parent who nurtured us (or didn't) in our childhood; as well as how we love and nurture ourselves and others in the here and now. We can now confront and heal childhood issues and make a course correction if we feel that we are repeating the mistakes of the past

There is a connection here between our immediate home environment and our emotional feelings and well being as several philosophies and beliefs support this connection. For example, in the practice of dream interpretation it is said the a house or home is a metaphor for your life in general. In addition, in the science and practice of Feng Shui it is believed that the manner in which our living spaces are arranged can have a direct impact on our lives and the things which happen to us. And in 2012 there was a TV show on Bravo called Interior Therapy that helped people confront and heal emotional blocks and issues by changing some aspect of their home and living space. 

Again, to figure out exactly how Mercury Retrograde will affect you on a personal, individual level, you will need to see what natal house Cancer is in. The area of life represented by that house is the area of life that will most be affected by Mercury Retrograde. Towards the end of this retrograde period, Mercury will begin to slow down again before coming to a full stop at 5° Cancer It will set there for a few days before it starts moving forward again. Mercury is said to Station Direct when it starts moving forward again. This is the period when many people feel like they can start breathing again (metaphorically speaking). They hear Mercury Direct and think that its over. But that is not the case. Mercury Stationing Direct is really the beginning of the Post-Shadow period. 

The Post-Shadow is the period between the time Mercury stations direct and it reaches the point where it initially began to slow down in the first place. It is characterized as a period in which those issues raised during Mercury Retrograde are still present but may be winding down, that is, they are still present but not as intense as before. During this post shadow phase is where we take what we learned during Mercury Retrograde and apply that knowledge to re-dress and re-solve those issues and conditions that were raised during Mercury Retrograde.

When Mercury (I think) is in Cancer (I feel) people's minds and thought processes are ruled, or over ruled,  by their emotions.  The mind is clouded by the emotions and it isn't as quick as it is normally. Decisions may be based on feelings rather than facts.  The House where Cancer falls in your natal chart is where you are likely to feel the effects of mercury in Cancer. 

• If your rising sign is Aries, Cancer is your 4th House. 
• If your rising sign is Taurus, Cancer is your 3rd House. 
• If your rising sign is Gemini, Cancer is your 2nd House. 
• If your rising sign is Cancer, Cancer is your 1st House. 
• If your rising sign is Leo, Cancer is your 12th House. 
• If your rising sign is Virgo, Cancer is your 11th House. 
• If your rising sign is Libra, Cancer is your 10th House.

The urge to think expresses itself as nostalgic, nurturing, and moody and this generally manifest in the area of spiritual growth, dreams, and long journeys. Mercury in Cancer in the 9th house can indicate a mind clouded by one's feelings about spirituality and their direction in life. Any decisions made regarding your spiritual growth will likely be based on feelings rather than cold, hard, facts. You may also feel the urge to travel to places you've never been before or meet and speak with people from other cultures.   

Aspects 

Aspects, or relationships between planets,  are another dimension of astrological interpretation that should be considered. Let us suppose then that you have Natal Pluto at 3° Libra that would mean that Mercury at 0° Cancer is making a square to your Natal Pluto. A square is a type of hard (difficult) aspect in which the energy or urge of one planet is squaring off against the energy or urge of another planets creating friction. When Mercury squares Pluto you can be more pessimistice and brooding. You're more suspicious of other people now and their motivations and feel the urge to investigate them to get to the bottom of hte matter. 

The Ruler of the House

The Ruler of the house should also be considered. Mercury rules both Gemini and Virgo and so the natal houses these signs occupy will be affected by the ingress of Mercury into Cancer. For the purpose of this blog I will focus on Virgo. To interpret this place you need to ask yourself two questions. They are:

1. What house does Mercury Ruled Virgo occupy in my Natal Chart?
2. What housed does Cancer occupy in my Natal Chart? 

Let us suppose that Virgo is your 11th house, which would make Cancer your 9th House. This could be expressed as the Ruler of the 11th house in the 9th house or the activities of the 11th house serve the agenda of the 9th house. This, in turn, can be expressed as "friends, associates, and connections serve higher education, travel, and meeting people from different places and cultures." We can than extrapolate on this statement and say something like "your friend include people from many different places and cultures and they introduce you to new ways of thinking and believing. You travel with your friends and have a shared interesting if discoverin glife's meaning. "
