The Venus Return: A Review 

The Venus Return is similar to the Lunar Return and the Solar Return charts. It is calculated for the precise moment that Venus will return to it's exact Natal Position and for your location at the time of the Venus return. Venus will return to its natal position about once a year, however, since Venus occasionally goes retrograde you can have up to three. A Venus return chart is good for the time between the current Venus return and the next one.  Among other things, Venus rules over money and love and so a Venus Return is a tool used to forecast your upcoming social and romantic life and to a lesser extent financial matters. 

Hoodoo & Your Venus Return 

Your Venus Return (VR) is a good time to review the state of your love life and financial status and to take steps to nurture and or improve them.  To give you an idea how to do this, I am going to share with you how I view and observe my VR. I often print my VR Chart well beforehand and write my notes based on my interpretation of the chart on the chart itself. On the reverse side of the page, I take out my ephemeris and write down all the dates that Venus enters a new sign (and therefore a new natal house) between the VR being interpreted and the next one. When a planet changes signs, it is felt in the world and therefore in our lives. Knowing when Venus enters a new sign and natal house can give me an idea of how I can expect Venus in each house to manifest for me. 

Your VR occurs when transit Venus makes an exact conjunction to your natal Venus. I use an orb of two degrees when considering applying and separating aspects.  At the time of my birth, Venus was at 2° Scorpio. So I start feeling the effects of my VR as soon as Venus enters Scorpio.  When this occurs, I take out my VR Chart Interpretation and carry it with me the entire time that Venus transits from 0° Scorpio to 4° Scorpio.  I make notes on the back of the chart about any significant events that occur in the realm of love and money. The reason for this is because events that occur during this time often reflect what you can expect to occur. For example, on the day of my VR in 2018, I had want to the grocery store to pick up some things and while leaving the store I passed an attractive young man who looked me in the eye and said "you have a beautiful smile". That same year I garnered a lot of attention and interest from several young men. 

A Three Point Plan 

My approach to the VR can be divided into three steps associated with the aspects of Transit Venus to Natal Venus. Again, they are applying (approaching exact), exact, and separating (leaving exact). 

Applying  

The applying conjunction begins when Venus is within two degrees of your natal position. Since my Venus is at 2° Scorpio, the applying conjunction for me begins when Venus enters 0° Scorpio. Venus is all about love, comfort, security, and luxury. As soon as the applying conjunction activates, I start treating myself. When you look good, you feel good (and vice versa) so I usually get a haircut and buy myself at least one new outfit. I may also treat myself to a few special meals. It is important to remember that it is okay to spoil yourself as long as in so doing you do not create a financial hardship for yourself or overindulge in food or drink in an unhealthy manner.

The applying conjunction phase of your VR is a time of planning and preparation. Use this time to study your chart, review the state of your love life, decide what you want and how you will go about obtaining your goals in terms of money and love. One way I do this is to use the keywords for points and positions in my VR chart to write an affirmation or affirmative prayer. For example. 

• The planet describes what is happening. 
• The sign describes how it is happening 
• The natal house describes where it is happening. 
• The Ascendant in the VR chart describes the outward face you project on the world. 
• The Descendent in the VR chart describes what you are attracting. 

Using my own chart as an example. I have Venus in Scorpio and the 1st House in my Natal Chart. I have Aquarius as the ascendant in my VR Chart which makes Leo the descendent. 

Using our keyword system, we can string together the following statement:

I love (Venus) passionately and intensely (in Scorpio) myself (1st house). Other people see me as unique, loyal, loving, and imaginative (Aquarius qualities) I am attracting someone who is loving, faithful, confident, affectionate, and generous (Leo qualities). 

And this statement can be translated to an affirmation such as:

I love myself with a passion and this love is reflected in the world in the form of those around me who can sense and appreciate my magnetism and desirability. Men are drawn to all those qualities which make me the unique and special person that I am.  I now attract to myself a man who is confident, affectionate, faithful, and generous who will love me and desire me as I love and desire myself. And so it is. 

Conjunction 

When Transit-Venus is making an exact conjunction to Natal-Venus, this is the time to do your actual work. This is when you will fix a mojo bag, work a doll baby, burn a candle, etc... For example. you may write your affirmation on a piece of paper and place this under a red candle dressed with Venus Planetary Oil. The candle would then be burned as you make your prayer or petition to attract a lover. When the candle burns out you can take your prayer and press it in your Bible anywhere it says "and this shall come to pass." 

This would also be the day that you would do whatever you can to make yourself appear as attractive as possible. Wear a new flattering outfit. Spritz yourself with cologne or perfume ( I prefer Cool Water), place a violet leaf in your shoe and dress yourself with any type of love-drawing condition oil. 

Separating 

In step one (applying) you devised a plan. In step two (exact) you enacted your plan. Now in step three you simply let go. Set it and forget it. Go about your life and trust that the work that you have done will manifest.

The need for sex and intimacy may also be stronger. They may also be somewhat more secretive but demand more transparency from those around them. Their focus may turn to transforming their lives in some way that they consider profound and meaningful.

With the Sun in Scorpio and the 1st house, you focus on yourself. You have more self-esteem and self-confidence and you want more attention and interest from others.  You have an outlook on life that can be described as more bold and you're more willing to take risks.  This is a good time to experiment with your look or style by changing your hairstyle or your manner of dress.  This is also a good time for you to try new things in general. 

The Aspects 

Another thing to look at would be the aspects that the Sun in 0° Scorpio makes to other planet and points in your chart. For example, in my chart the Sun in 0° Scorpio is making an applying conjunction to my Ascendant at 5° Scorpio.  If the Sun is conjunct the Ascendant (myself) it is also opposite the Descendent (others), you put more focus on yourself and your own needs, wants, and desires and this can sometimes be at the expense of others. This aspect also accentuates the theme of beginnings so there is a strong likelihood that a new beginning of some kind will be initiated when the transit Sun is conjunct the natal Ascendant.

Interpreting the Venus Return 

1. What is the Ascendant in the Transit Chart?  What House does the Transit Ascendant fall in your Natal Chart? This will give you an idea of how you approach matters of love and money in the coming year and the area of life that will be of more importance or more affected by the Venus Return. 
2. What is the Chart Ruler and what house does it occupy in the Transit Chart? 
3. What sign is on the descendent? How does the Natal Ascendant aspect the Transit Ascendant? If they connect in a friendly way, i.e. by trine or sextile, a relationship can form. However, if they connect by square or opposition forming a relationship will be more difficult. 
4. What house does Transit Venus occupy in the transit chart? 
5. What aspects are made between Transit Venus and the Natal Chart (since Venus occupies the same place in both charts, the aspects made between Natal Venus and planets in the Transit Chart will be the same). 
6.  Are there any planets on the four angles?
7. Do any natal planets occupy the angles in the return chart? 
8. Are any planets in the return chart  at the critical degrees of either 0° or 29°? 

Interpreting the Venus Return, An Example

In this example, we will be looking at the Venus Return chart of actor Joaquin Phoenix (Libra Sun, Aries Moon, Virgo Rising) who is gaining a lot of notoriety right now for his portrayal of the Joker in the 2019 film of the same name. As near as I can tell, Joaquin was in Hollywood California on the day of his Venus Return and that is the location for which I generated his Venus Return chart. 

The first thing I notice here is that the Ascendant for both his Natal Chart and his Venus Return Chart are the same, which is Virgo.  He can come across as methodical, refined, and intellectual.  He has an analytical mind and a discriminating nature. He can be nervous and restless at times and she and undemonstrative at other. Virgo is ruled by Mercury which occupies the second house.  This tells me that in matters of love, and to a lesser degree money, it is important that he remain humble and not allow his success go to this head. He may strive for perfection in his relationships and in his work and will most likely be his own worst critic.  The chart ruler, Mercury, in the second house indicates that he will need to exercise patience in his relationships and in his interactions with others (especially interviews!)  He may also be motivated to have more security and comfort and may not be inclined this year to do anything too out-of-the-ordinary in order to have it.  

With a Virgo / Pisces axis (Ascendant / Descendant) he comes across as organized, reserved and methodical. However, in terms of romance he can be a shy and quiet dreamer. He is attracted to someone who has the qualities of sensitivity, artistic, creative, and compassionate. With the Natal Ascendant opposite the Transit Descendent he and his partner can find one another physically attractive but he may tend to see his partner as needing to be corrected, improved, or refined and she may feel that he needs to be less critical and more open to the invisible. 

With Venus in the 3rd house (transit and natal) he may be looking for more mental stimulation in his relationships this year. The third house rules Gemini (the twins) and so it is possible that he may find himself attracted to two people at the same time. He could meet this person while traveling, online, or through a sibling or even a neighbor. 

Transit Venus makes no major aspects (Ptolemaic) to natal planets. However, transit Venus does make a quincunx to the natal Moon can bring a increased need for love and affection. Nonetheless it also creates friction between the subject and his loved one. This cause for this can be a lack of reciprocation between partnesr ---- the amount of love received does not equal the amount given. This could be the impetus for seeking love outside his current relationship as indicated by Venus transiting the 3rd house. 

The subject has Jupiter in the angular fourth house and both Neptune and the Moon in the angular 7th house. Jupiter in the fourth house can indicate a need for more harmony and stability. This desire can lead to attempts to improve familiar relationships. 

The Moon and Neptune in the 7th house can be an indication that indicate an emotional desire to work on relationships, however, the subject may need more love and his attention that his partner can give.  He may attract people who end up hurting him or taking advantage of him in some way.  

Putting it All Together

This chart paints a picture of someone who is a diplomatic, people pleaser who can be aggressive and quick to anger. He is often perceived as organized, methodical, and critical --- of himself and others. He demands perfection out of himself and others. In love he can be dreamy and romantic but tends to be critical and demanding of his partner.  He and his partner may find themselves physically attracted to one another but lack compatibility in other more substantive areas.

It will be important that he exercise patience in all his dealings (in both love and money) during this transit. He wants more security, more comfort, and more love. Rather than trying something new to increase his finances or improve his relationships, he should refrain from trying anything new but rather stick to traditional, more proven methods.

He may find that he needs more love than his partner can give.  He may feel that he loves his partner more than she loves him and so he may find himself seeking mental stimulation from someone else. He may meet someone while traveling, online, or through a friend or neighbor who he will find attractive and who will give him the mental stimulation that he desires.  He may find that he attracts people who deceive him or who do not have his best interests at heart. This person may hurt him or otherwise take advantage of him. This is a karmic lesson that he is being presented with to be more discriminating in love and not go all in too quickly. Generally, the subject wishes to improve his familial relationships (all kinds) so as to have more harmony and stability.

A Full Moon occurs when the Sun and Moon occupy the same degree of opposing houses. As you can see from the chart above, the Sun is at 20° Libra and the Moon is at 20° Aries forming an opposition making this a Full Moon.

The Big Picture 

The Sun is transiting the relationships sector of the chart while the fiery Aries Moon is lending power to our sense of individuality.

When the Moon is new, we can expect new things in our lives. However, the Full moon is the domain of endings. The Full Moon in Aries is interesting because, being the first sign of the zodiac, it is associated with beginnings. Aries rules the self, so with the Full Moon in Aries this is a time in which we can re-evaluate the self and our priorities in life.  This is a time to let go of negative or unwanted aspects of our self and identity so that we can grow and evolve.  This can also be a time in which people generally feel like they need more attention and they can go a little overboard in how they try to get that attention.  Aries is ruled by Mars and so we can also be a little more quicker to anger. Mars is making a sextile to Jupiter at the time of the Full Moon new ideas are open to us, we can follow a new path and we have the energy we need to pursue our goals. 

Whereas Aries is all about the self and our personal needs, Libra is all about our relationships and connection to others With the Moon in Aries and the Sun in Libra there is a divide between what we want and what the other in our lives need from us. The Moon is making a square to Pluto adding to the emotional tug of war between the ego of "me" and the partnership of "us".  This is a time in which we may want to spend more time alone with our selves and less time with our partners causing friction in our relationships. 

This is a pattern that we will see play out in world events, on social media in the lives of our friends and followers, and in our own lives.  

The Personal Touch 

To better understand how the Full Moon in Aries will affect you, you need to look at the natal houses Aries and Virgo occupy in your birth chart. For example, Aries occupies my 6th house while Libra rules by twelfth setting up. The 6th house rules our routines, work, and service to others while the 12th house is all about escape and withdrawal so for me there is a divide between being useful to others and doing what I want to do. 

With the Full Moon in my natal 6th house, areas of health and work become a concern.  This is a good time to refine and improve any diet or exercise program. Let go of what is not working and try to figure out something else that works better.   

Transit Uranus making an opposition to my natal Moon can manifest as an inability to rein in my emotions and my desire for change may even seem irrational. This is balanced somewhat by Transit Pluto making a trine to my Natal Sun granting a new sense of personal power in my life and that I have more control over any changes that happen to me or in my life.   

How to Work with Full Moon in Aries Energy 

• Finish old projects before starting new ones. 
• Take a personal inventory of self and choose one aspect of your personality you don't like and make an effort to eliminate that quality,  mode of thought or behavior. 
•  Decide what you like about yourself and work on expanding and accentuating those qualities. 
• Spend some time on self-care, whatever that means to you. Get your hair or nails done, treat yourself to a nice meal, buy a new outfit.  
• Take your relationships to the next level or break if off completely if you don't think it's going to go anywhere. 
• Let go of the past. 
• Study  your own Natal Chart.

Venus rules Taurus which is 180° from Scorpio therefore Venus is said to be in detriment in Scorpio What this means is that it's power is diminished, it is cut off from it's usual resources and will need to learn how to adapt in order to fulfill its urges. Venus' urge is to love and be loved, to have affection, comfort, and security. Generally speaking when Venus is in Scorpio people are more intense and passionate about romance, sex, sensuality, security, and mysteries. They want these things but have trouble attracting them, they try too hard, they put themselves in vulnerable positions and things may or may not work out for them.

The first house is all about you: what I want, what I need. With Venus in the First house you want to love, to be loved, to have security, and to experience comfort and luxury. Scorpio adds an intensity to the desire to love and be loved.  You are drawn to anyone who is dark, mysterious, and who has the potential to give you the sense of security that you desire. However, since Venus is in detriment in Scorpio you may also try too hard, you may come across as too needy, too clingy, or too possessive which may cause anyone you direct your attention and interest toward to pull away from you.

In addition to house placement, you will also want to look at any aspects formed between Venus in 0° Scorpio and any other planets in your natal chart. For example. Transit Venus in 0° Scorpio is making a square to my Natal Jupiter in 02° Aquarius.  When Venus is square to Jupiter, you encounter obstacles in  regards to making love grow. For this reason you may compensate by overindulging in food or drink (pleasure of the senses) or buying things that you really don't need or which do not bring the satisfaction that you thought it would.  Laziness can also a result of Venus square Jupiter.

Mars represents our drives and Libra rules over relationships of all kinds (business partnerships, friendships, and romantic or sexual relationships). When Mars enters Libra people are generally driven to have more companionship and they are willing to compromise and negotiate to get that commitment. The shadow side of this is that they can be more apt to enter too hastily into relationships and give up more than they will receive in order to have commitment (especially men). 

Where Libra falls in your natal chart is the area of life where Mars in Libra will most be felt in your life.

For this reason, you are driven to be alone and spend more time in quiet reflection. In order to have more alone time, you might negotiate for it or make compromises in order to have more solitude. 

In addition to the ingress of Mars into Libra, you would also want to look at any aspects formed between Mars in 0° Libra and planets in your natal chart. For example Mars in 0° Libra is forming a conjunction to my Natal Pluto in 03° Libra. With Mare conjunct Pluto you are more magnetic and powerful than usual as well as willful and determined.  You are driven to transform something in your life and you now have both the power and will to make it so.

Mercury rules the mind and our ability to think and Scorpio represents the archetype of the researcher, so the mind is receptive to investigation and research now. When Mercury is in Scorpio people can, generally speaking, be more suspicious and fond of crime and mysteries in general. They can be more passionate and intense in regards to anything that they find themselves curious about or which they do not understand. They may also be more apt to talk about sex and sexual needs (especially with their partner).

From personal experience, I can say that I met a man online shortly after Mercury entered Scorpio and we have a very long conversation about what we are looking for in a partner, mostly sexually, what our boundaries are, and what we would like to explore about ourselves sexually.

You're more talkative and are likely to strike up conversations with others and you learn about yourself through your interactions with others and their perception of you.

In addition to the ingress of Mercury in Scorpio, you would also want to look at any aspects formed between Mercury and the planets in your Natal Chart.

* Any planets around 0-2° +/- Scorpio will form a Conjunction

* Any planets around 0-2° +/- Virgo or Capricorn will form a Sextile

* Any planets around 0-2° +/- Leo or Aquarius will form a Square

* Any planets around 0-2° +/- Cancer or Pisces will form a Trine

* Any planets around 0-2° +/- Taurus will form an opposition

For example, in my own Natal Chart I have Jupiter in 2° Aquarius meaning that Mercury is making a Square to Neptune. When Mercury (I think) is Square (Hard Aspect) to Jupiter (I Expand) you may experience thinking and behavior that is considered over-the-top and you may have trouble reigning yourself in. Any decisions that need to be made should be well thought out before committing yourself to any options.

Pluto Direct October 2019

I talked about Pluto Retrograde in a previous post. Today, I want to share some insights into Pluto Direct. Pluto's mantra is "I Transform" but it would probably be more accurate to say that it is "Change or be changed". What this means is that we can make friends with change, accept it, and ride the wave of cosmic energies; or we can swim against the universal current fighting change every step of the way with every ounce of strength that we have. Our attitude towards change can have a direct effect on how we experience this retrograde. 

During Pluto Retrograde we were given the opportunity to examine our sense of personal power. In order to appreciate something, we often have to lose it or otherwise have it taken from us. The natal house where Capricorn falls in your chart is the area of life most affected by Pluto Retrograde. This is the area of life in which you may have felt that you had a lack of power or control. For example, in my day job I work in an office environment. My job requires me to build and maintain relationships with affiliates in my industry who we depend upon for work. Some of my affiliates I get along quite well with and others I do not. 

Capricorn falls in the 3rd house in my natal chart. The third houses rules over communication and short journeys. In addition the 3rd house is ruled by Mercury the planet of communication and travel (again, I work in the moving industry).  The majority of my communication with our affiliates is via email and some by phone.  I am a very direct person, I don't "fluff" my emails or my conversations. My goal is to give/receive the information needed or requested as quickly as possible and get off the phone or end the email chain so I can move on to my next task. For example. I hate the small "pleasantries" that precede a conversation such as "How are you today?" (this is a question that I usually answer quickly but fail to reciprocate). Communicating with others (at work), especially on the phone,  is an area of life where I feel powerless because I cannot speak freely as I would like to.  For this reason, I have had to learn to change the way I communicate with others. 

Now that Pluto will be stationing direct, I will be presented with the opportunities to show what I have learned about that way in which I communicate with others. If I can successfully change my communication style I will have shown that I am capable of growth and self-improvement. If not, Pluto will see to it that I am forced to transform (change or be changed).
